Federer: What Is His Most Underrated Attribute?

Typical biased post from one of the biggest anti-Fed haters around. There are certainly aspects of his game that are extremely under-rated, #1 being his mental game, imo, where he is strongest in the world, as far as I'm concerned.

There are other areas that are over-rated, such as someone claiming his second serve was better than Sampras' 2nd serve (lol), although that was an isolated case and may have been a joke.

He is bitter because Djokovic got spanked by Federer at USO and Nadal at the Olympics.

Nobody ever talks about he always picks the right time to run around his backhand. The resulting forehand is usually either a winner or gives him complete control of the point.

Are you sure those things are underrated? I am not talking about a few kids on this forum (we all know how many stupid things are written here everyday) but what players, commentators, tennis journalists...say.
Everything I heard about Federer´s game is praise. That´s why I said that there is not one underrated thing in his game. It´s not that he doesn´t deserve the praise, especially in the 2004-2006 period, but I feel he has been worshipped too much like if tennis was all about him.

Yeah, you're probably right that commentators, players, media etc. were fawning over Fed too much but he did have one of the most amazingly dominant periods and tennis and has a very aesthetically pleasing game so with the way media works it's not that suprising that they were all talking about him like he's above sport(which nobody is).But at one point it was probably too much and as a tennis fan I was kinda glad when Nadal arrived on scene even though I'm a big Fed fan,it made things more interesting and tennis more exciting.

However if we're talking about this forum,I'd say people underrate his BH and mental toughness way too much.Fed won his 13 slams mosly from the baseline(and I mean 90% from the baseline),you can't do that if you're not great off both sides and no way you can dominate this long the way Fed did if you're not exceptionally mentally strong.Atleast that's my opinion.

I think it´s other players that have been way underrated because they play in the Federer era and you know who I am referring to :)

Yeah,I think I have a pretty good idea, lol. And I agree that that certain player is underrated on grass and on surfaces other than clay in general(atleast in this forum).

serve.. such a simple yet awesome serve. his mechanics, timing and location on it are just perfect.

But lately he seems to be using his kick 2nd serve a lot less. Instead he seems to use more of a slice-topspin second with more pace/less kick. Maybe he is trying to reduce the stress on his back/body.

Nadal is under- and over-rated, depending on where you look. Those saying he had the "best" HC season this year, and has "surpassed Federer on grass" (and are even arguing he's a better grass-court player than Fed during his 5 years of winning Wimbledon), are definitely over-rating him. Honestly, I don't see many people under-rating him at the moment. Just the same stupid talk by the same old Nadal fans about how he's "only 22 years old" and "it's scary what he'll do over the rest of his career," as if all players come into their prime at the same time and as if he'll play another 10 years, despite his grueling style.

Not sure what term you'd use to describe it but achieving what he has without a full time coach.

I said several times already. I do not hate Federer and I actually liked him before I started coming here. He is certainly one of the best players that ever walked the earth. I just despise his unrealistic and biased religious sect on this forum.

I don't think there are a lot of posters here who overrate Nadal that much. There are a few of them but they post often and will start to talk how great Nadal,Nadal is the GOAT,best hardcourter etc. in almost every thread regardless of the title. So I don't think there are many of them but they stick out.

I'd say his feet, and how strong he is for his weight (keeps him fast).

Something that people don't tend to notice is how calmly he plays. If you're playing against someone, and after a brutally long rally you're absolutely wiped and feeling like your lungs are on fire, he's just standing there, cool as a cucumber. It's ridiculous, how can you accept that, as an opponent? It's hard to beat someone with that kind of presence.

Exactly, I have heard all types of kudos about him except his calmness which I often notice in his game. Now you may say it is not a plus, why not roar like Nadal does and challenge/ intimidate/ distract your opponent? But at the end I think when you stay calm and quiet you will look smarter, vivid, stronger. Over all his charachter is very self-contained.

I think it's his ability to wear his pants backwards whilst simultaneously lifting a Wimbledon trophy.

Not many people can do that!

His return of serve. Not enough people talk about how well he's able to adjust and get MANY serves back into play.
