Federico Coria, younger brother of past #3 ranked ATP player, Guillermo, currently 335 in the ATP rankings, was found guilty of corruption for not collaborating in the investigation about an attempt of match fixing he refused to accept.
The case is different to the one of his countryman, Nicolás Kicker, as Coria did not accept any money, and did not accept any deal with the criminals. As per the organization, Coria did not inform that he was offered money for match fixing in the Sassuolo, Italy 2015 Futures tournament. The report clarifies that he did not accept the bribe, but states that he violated the anti corruption program because he did not denounce the attempt.
Coria did not collaborate with the investigation, as he alleged that he and his family were threatened, and he was afraid for their safety.
He may be suspended for 6 months to one year.
Match fixing is certainly not legal, but punishing this group of players is just to attack the tip of an iceberg showing an exponential growth. There are renowned gambling institutions that work together with the ATP, and that in some cases, act as tournaments sponsors. It seems that official organizations choose just to protect the business instead of protecting the players, who in the end provide the sports entertainment, but have to face the impunity of the threats of all sorts of gamblers.
