Fognini and Fils

Played in last round of qualifying for Paris on Sunday and Fils won. Fognini got in as lucky loser and they played again today and Fognini won. This must be a rare occurrence. Anyone know of it happening before?

Pretty common, actually. And I feel like more often than not, as was the case here, the lucky loser comes out on top. Don't have exact stats (would be interesting to see them) but I remember a young Sinner easily beating the journeyman Lamasine to qualify somewhere in France (Lyon?), then losing badly to him the very next day, with a bagel to boot!

Interesting. Something similar happens in the Tour Finals, as when in 2015, Federer beat Djokovic in the round robin and then lost to him in the final. The first year I ever followed, Edberg beat Wilander in the round robin, and then played him in the semi-final (not sure why they were even drawn against each other in the semi-final - these days, the semi-finals are always winner of one group versus runner-up of the other) and lost. Sampras and Becker had a nice sideline in beating each other in round robin only to lose in the final - it happened in 1994 and 1996, but in 1991, 1992, and 1995, the loser of their round-robin match also went on to win the title, albeit without getting revenge in the final.
