Full job vs. hybrid - no poly’s

To cut cost many use a higher priced string in the main with a synthetic gut cross. Most agree the main string generally contributes more to playability and feel than the cross. So at any price point what’s better, the full job or hybrid? If your using one of these price points have you compared to the alternate set up at that price point?

Price Point (cost +/- a little)
$20 - high priced multi vs. premium gut / syn gut hybrid
$15 – premium multi vs. high quality value gut / syn gut hybrid
$11 – mid priced multi vs. premium multi / syn gut hybrid
$7 - value multi vs mid price multi / syn gut hybrid

Price point based on these non-poly string families (cost +/- a little)
$35 premium guts
$27 high quality value guts
$20 high priced multi
$15 premium multi
$11 mid price multi
$7 value multi
$3.50 syn gut

Can anyone discuss what play’s better for the money?

1. Hybrid with a higher price string in the main and synthetic gut cross
2. All multi of same string at same price as 1

Sorry - I can't answer that question. I'm not sure anyone can. There are just too many variables, and what might play best for me, might not play best for you. It really all comes down to personal preference, and you just need to try a few different setups and decide for yourself.

With that said, I could potentially help you out if you provided more specific information.

With regard to #1, I don't know what you mean by "higher price string in the mains". A "higher price string" could mean natural gut, could mean a high-end multi, and it could even mean a higher-end poly - all of which would play very differently.

If you can narrow your options a little and then ask some more specific questions, I (and others) can probably help you out. For example, how is the playability of Alu Power (poly) in the mains and NRG2 (multi) in the crosses vs. a full job of NRG2?

Take care.

The best hybrid job I've ever played with without a poly was a VS Team mains / X-1 Biphase crosses hybrid in a Prestige Mid at 54 pounds.

One of the hybrid setups that gets the most play and and most feedback on these boards is the Mojo setup. I believe that it's 17g Klip Legend in the mains and 17g (or is it 16?) Isospeed Pro Classic in the crosses. I've never played with it, but I've read that it plays VERY nicely and lasts for a fairly long time. Considering that it comes out to be... what, 18 bucks a set, it's not that bad a deal.
