Garage door fix help

I need to replace two springs in my garage door. One went sprung. As a temporary fix, I took that spring off, sawed off the sprung portion, and put it back in place. It's hard to open and close, so I know I need (and want) new springs for the door.

It was tough pulling back the spring.

I cannot recall the name of the kind of jack thing that will multiply your force, a turnjack? turnbuckle?, to let me pull back (to install) the new springs.

what's the name of this thing?

I suppose at worst, I could put together a pulley to pull back the new springs to install them.

We just have a garage door company inspect and oil the mechanism every 1 or 2 years. Gives me peace of mind that the thing won't fall on my car, my head, or a guest's head.

A turnbuckle could work but they are mainly designed to stay in place. The ropes on a boxing ring are tightened up by a turnbuckle for example.

How big of a spring is it? If read that right what you are trying to do is stretch the spring out to hook it onto something. I know for washing machines and small appliance they make a tool called a tension spring expander. But those are typically small and don't think will work with a garage door spring.

The springs on my garage door are attached at the bottom by a long rod, that rod can be loosed to allow the springs to come loose. Then I would hook the spring around that and tighten back. When the door is closed or open (I cant remember which) the spring does not have much pressure on it so it should be easy enough for you and maybe a buddy to hook it around if that's all you need to do.

http://ddmgaragedoors.com/ has videos and all kinds of stuff and they can probably answer your questions and sell you what spring you need.

Have someone do it, if the spring uncoils while putting it on, it could take your head off.

I do all my repairs on my house, but a high tension spring is to dangerous.

I had a spring go out and hired a garage door guy to fix it! He said that he does this almost every day for 30 years! It took him about 20 minutes to remove and install and wine back up the new spring. He has a special tool to do that! Cost was only $200 include the new spring!
