Hahaha... Poor Elena...

Why do people keep referring to Maria as the Russian? Everyone knows she grew up in Florida and there isn't a lot of tennis you can learn at 6 years old. Her style of play is American, not Russian, but she's known as one of the Russian players.

Well, she still plays for Russia... so until she decides she wants to play for the U.S., I don't think it matters where she trained. I don't blame Elena for making those comments though... I think Maria said in one of her interviews that she tries not to get too close with other players in the locker room, since she knows she has to play them. I would imagine that the only Russian player she's relatively close to is Myskina, since they both trained with Landsdorp.

Because her nationality is Russian.
The bigger difference between 'I am not her' Dementieva and Maria is that we will be seeing Maria in future grand slam finals. Doubt Eva will get a sniff again.

I really like Dementieva as a person.

During an interview, a reporter was really getting on her about her serve. Everyone knows her serve is suspect. Even Elena. She proceeded to say that one doesn't have to be a serving master to play and win in tennis. Her results speak to this. While she should continue to try and beef up her serve, I think her positive attitude and fierce groundstrokes will serve her well in the future. I like to watch her matches.

Anyways....I think what Elena says is right on. Maria ain't no Russian.

Because SHE keeps referring herself as Russian. Tursunov, for examp., apllies for American citisenship, so very soon he'll become an American. Smashnova- Pistolesi is now Israeli but seeing the surname like hers you haven't to be a genius to gess her origion.

BTW, there is no Russian style of play. The majority of top russian players were raised abroad - in Spain or in the US.

Regardless of where she trained/grew up, Sharapova is Russian. Smashnova-Pistolesi is an Israeli citizen who migrated from, I believe, Belarus. In her case, I sincerely DOUBT that she would ever refer to herself a Russian or a Belarussian.

I'm sure she wouldn't.
