Has this ever happened before?

Federer currently has 16 majors, while the rest of the active players, combined, have 15. The breakdown is as follows:

Nadal - 6
Hewitt - 2
Del Potro - 1
Djokovic - 1
Ferrero - 1
Gaudio - 1
Johansson - 1
Moya - 1
Roddick - 1

So Federer has won more grand slam titles than the remainder of the field combined. My question is: has this ever happened before (excluding of course the first Wimbledon champion, Spencer Gore)?

Here is the scary part:

Nadal - 6
Del Potro - 1
Djokovic - 1
Roddick -1
Murray - 0
Sod-0
Davy-0
Tsonga-0
Cilic-0

I am beginning to wonder whether the rest of the top 10 COMBINED might be able to win 16 slams before their careers are done. And Fed ain't done yet.

Doesn't depend on them, depends on Federer. All this is by no means suggesting the era is weak, it's only suggesting that Federer is sick.

Shows how great Fed is, no? Or how much the rest of the tour has underachieved.

Before last year's US Open, the numbers were as follows:

Federer - 15

Nadal - 6
Hewitt - 2
Safin - 2
Djokovic - 1
Ferrero - 1
Gaudio - 1
Moya - 1
Roddick - 1

Total: 15

So at that point he had equalled (but not exceeded) the total grand slam count of the remainder of the men's field.

Exactly. This is the first time ever. I'm sure Borg and Sampras never had more slams than the field combined at any point of their careers.

Reredef owns Jenny.

Sorry, But JennyS is profesionnal and this thread has been brought up by Jenny or someone else before. The thing is at that time Federer had 15 slams!
Rederef the last time that happened was in 2002 when Pete won his 14th!

This reminds me, where's Gaudio? I remember when I watched him at RG 2004 it was my first time actually seeing and hearing about the guy, and I loved his game. He was insanely good during that tournament, except in the final, which I thought he was very lucky to win.

I saw him last year at Miami just hanging out at the tournament...I'm not sure he was even in the draw. We walked to the general public parking lot with Gaston and a hitting partner...I was going to ask what he had been doing, but he doesn't speak english very well...

2002:
Hewitt-2
Agassi-7
Safin-1
Moya-1
Costa-1
Johansson-1
Kafelnikov-2
Kuerten-3

That's just players in the top 50...I'm sure Krajicek and Ivanisevic were floating around somewhere.

Exactly. Even when Sampras was the all time slam winner with 14 slams, the ATP tour combined had more slams than him.

And after Wimbledon 2000, where he won #13 there were 16 others.
Agassi 6
Brugera 2
Kafelnikov 2
Kuerten 2
Rafter 2
Krajicek 1
Moya 1
