How to get less spin and more pace on serves

I'm not a good server and still practicing serves a lot. I can use flat, topspin, twist(weak), and slice serves. Because of the margin of error I get from topspin serve, I'm trying to put some topspin to the flat serve and use for the first serve. However, I just can't do that. I just have to serve either flat or topspin. So I want some tips (toss, motion) about how to serve with pace with adquate amount of topspin.

i dont understand. your title is "how to get less spin and more pace on serves" yet you are trying to put some more topspin on your flat serve. ???

But to get things straight, you want to add topsin on your flat serve for more margin for error?

Its probably the grip you are using. If its a backhand grip, change it to continental so you can get the pace of a flat serve, and the spin of a twist. Also try not to brush as much up on the ball. Keep probably half of that motion, but hit out on the rest.

my title is kinda awkward, but isn't it the same thing to sacrifice spin for pace or to add some topspin to the flatserve? Anywayz, I guess it's little topspin to flat serve.

He means that he wants to make his flat serve heavier and with more margin for error, like the Sampras serve.

I actually did this pretty well on one serve today. If you're having trouble getting drive on your serve I would look at your grip first. Are you using a full eastern backhand grip? I would try a continental and see how that works. Personally I like to use between a continental and eastern (extreme continental for all you over-analyzers).

I may not be the best person to give advice on this though, I just started learning the kick serve myself. I've probably hit about 10 decent ones and 1 serve exactly like you're describing, an ace up the T. :)

I'm pretty much the exact opposite as you, I tend to drive everything.

Just take my advice with a grain of salt and good luck with your serve!

I'm using a grip between a continental and eastern backhand grip. I think I should try a continental. But what should I do with swing motion? Just try to hit up less than topspin serve?

I'd try throwing it behind my head and trying to hit a flat serve. I know that may sound strange but if the spin is coming naturally then you'll probably impart topspin without even trying. Muscle memory is a very powerful thing, after all.

Like I said, I have the exact opposite problem as you do, I tend to get all drive and no spin, maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

Okay, I'll give it a try.

I hit my first serve with a swing as a flat but instead of a wrist snap I pronate
so that the racquet head has a forward, up and sideways velocity at the point of impact. This will result in good pace, a bit of topspin to clear the net, and a small kick on the bounce witch makes it a lot harder to return.

I just left a reply for Vince on another thread so I figured I might as well leave one here for you.

There are a ton of free videos on the serve at my blog:

When I want more pace on a kick serve I throw my toss more forward than usual and swing out into the court more but retaining a brush on the back of the ball.

After working with my coach yesterday, I found out that I was using a wrong grip. I thought I was using continental because v of the hand was on the left corner of the top bevel, but because of my hand shape (big palm, relatively short fingers; it's jsut not the regular shape *0*), my knuckle was on the right side(3rd bevel) of the grip. Also, I was having a problem with my wrist when I serve flat. After I adjusted the grip a little bit, pronation of the wrist became more natural and I didn't have to try too much to get my serve in.
