I fell in love tonight...AG100

it just remains to be seen if this is just a short lived fling or marriage as far as our future together is concerned. im talking about the dunlop aerogel 100 i received today and played with tonight.

i was playing doubles tonight and we always play three sets and switch partners each set. i was a sub for someone and my racket came from UPS right before i had to leave to go play. i bought it used and it had head rip control 17 in it at an unknown tension.

i got there a tad late so i was only able to warm up for a short while and man, that AG100 had some major pop! i was sending the ball long quite a bit while warming up but noticed that it had a great feel and major spin potential. the strung was obvisouly strung very low as it kept moving a lot while i was hitting.

we then started the first set and i went back to my AG200 which was freshly strung with luxilon ace 18 gauge. i played great with it and it had nice control and feel. we won 7-5 and i held serve throughout.

then in the second set i decided to give the AG100 a try even with the powerful string setup. my new partner wanted me to stay with the AG200 but i told him sorry pal, this baby just flew in from europe and it needed to hit. wow, i served first and had 2 aces and 2 unhittable kick serves where they barely got a frame on the ball. they were like "what the hell"?

i have never hit bombs that big with any racket ever! i could hit flat, kicks, slices anywhere. they literally got about 3 points off of my serve the rest of the night. just a joy to serve with, that alone had me thinking about keeping that super powerful string setup for the serve alone.

we won the second set easily at 6-1. this racket was also great at the net, super manuverable with nice pop and super accurate. i also hit two great overheads which is one of my weakest parts of my game.

the third set was more of the same, we won 6-4 and again i never lost my serve all night, not even close, i never even went to duece once. i was able to control the power pretty well during these doubles matches. the backhand slice was awesome with this racket, you feel like you can place it anywhere on the court you wish.

after we were done one of the other guys and i stayed behind to just bang away from the baseline. i really wanted to see how i played with it against a hard hitter where i had to swing out and also how my backhand played with this small head size.

i framed a few here and there but they mainly stayed in. this racket offers so much spin you have to be careful not to find your self hitting with a big upswing like all those full western grip guys playing babolats do. the head is not made for that that type of game. this caused several of my frames. i was also trying to hit too much spin to control the considerable power. with a slightly lower powered setup i feel i will probably hit more through the ball more as i do with my AG200.

you want to hit flat with this racket but when you need that spin it is there bigtime. this is where it really plays different than the AG200. the AG200 has moderate spin but this AG100 is a spin monster. my kick serves were crazy due to the spin. when i flattened it out it just took off and was by my opponent. with some fine tuning to the strings and some more court time to get used to the slightly smaller head i think i can do some serious damage at my club with this stick.

i cant wait to try and get a singles match tomorrow. i was wanting to put in my lux string job to cut down the power a tad but im almost not wanting to wait now after seeing how i serve with this thing. the weight of the racket is light in comparison to the AG200 which made it great for doubles because it was so manuverable. i didnt get tired at all playing with this racket and yet it has anough bulk so it doesn't get pushed around by a heavy ball.

i play a lot of different rackets and have demoed almost everything and this is the most excited i have been about a racket in a long long time. i had a luke warm first impression with the AG200 which i now like a lot and is my main racket but this racket is the most fun racket i have ever played with. i just hope i can keep that focus long enough in a match to keep the framed shots down. my new two handed backhands werent as good as they are with the AG200 but they were close and the slice was better as were my overheads and volleys.

here is how it compares to the AG200 after the first two sets of hitting with it.

Serve - AG100 (simply awesome, no contest)

Forehand - Tie (small head size caused some framing but they mainly stayed in play and it was very accurate when hitting flush, great feel for both)

Backhand - AG200 I haven't pulled out the old one handed backhand with this yet and it appears to be a great racket for that. But the AG200 is the best racket i have ever hit for a two handed backhand.

Volleys - AG100, this racket is much more manuverable than the AG200 and it has more pop and placement is excellent.

Overhead - AG100. Not even close in my opinion, again due to its manuverability. The AG200 can feel a tad sluggish hitting overheads.

I'm going to go ahead and put my lux ace 18 in this baby if for no other reason than to keep the strings from moving all over the place, that makes me crazy. but now i don't want to tame down the power too much because of the bombs i can hit with the serves.

i will update this after my singles match tomorrow.

Hmmm, weird how you feel this one to be stable and have enough swing weight, but you didn't like the AG 200 16x19, the 100 is only 3 grams heavier, and I'm not sure about the balance but that's close as well (from memory, I'm too lazy to search). Anyway, glad you like it, I was thinking about getting one just for kicks as well...I don't think I want to be consistently playing with a 90 on clay (I'm not Federer :D).

Thanks, miles, for your input on the AG100.

Looking forward to more info on the stick.

I've been eyeing this racket for sometime too and been thinking of asking my nephew in Germany to send me one.

Ag 100 is a very nice racquet. I've been using it since january. I used Rdx 500 Mid before.
Ag 100 is quite powerful, despite beeing a Mid and is quite light, so that I had to raise stings' tension and put some lead in order to make it more stable and to be able to control its power.
However, the added pop remains and comes very helpful when serving or at net.
Besides, Ag 100 has a very good directional control.
I'm selling two of my Rdx, having already bought another Ag100

This is the 90 sq. in. head right? Now in doubles you hit (roughly) half the balls. And you did well with it so you must have got good angles and great feel and pin-point volleys.

Leave aside serve for a moment.

As you're not necessarily powering away in doubles, a lighter racquet responsive to more feel (the AG100 compared to the AG200) it seems logical the AG100 would give you the edge. I wonder that however in singles the AG200 will be what you want. Those framed groundstrokes you mention may add up quite quickly in rally-based singles.

Also there's always a honeymoon period where what you swing is different enough to change your game. Big kudos for pulling it out in competitive play as that is the best test.

But not losing your serve all night partly with a new stick - that's gold.

Mileslong,

Thank for the great review! Can you compare the AG100 to the Redondo Mid? Thx.

I don't see it on TW so I guess it's a Euro frame. Sounds a bit like the K90 though I don't know if there's a big weight difference.

The smaller head moves the sweet spot up on the racquet a little higher which can help on the serve and volley as it gives you the better power a little further from your body.

There is a HUGE weight difference between the two. The aerogel 100 specs state that it's 315 grams unstrung, so that's even lighter than the Asian version of the K90...the difference to the "ROW - rest of world" K90 being 25 grams. 25 grams difference is huge in a racket...it's the difference between a Radical and a Prestige practically.

I'm coming from a much heavier racquet to the K90 so the K90 seems relatively light. I work a lot better with ounces than grams too.

I don't, it's easier in grams for me, and since I'm the one giving the info and you're the one receiving the info I presume some "google-ing" isn't too much to ask ? :). I knew the weight without searching for it since I was interested in the frame a while back (and still am) so I just typed the reply.
I'm sure there are plenty of places on the internet that can "translate" grams/kg into ounces ;).
Hope this helps.

PS 340 grams = 12 ounces ==> 1 ounce = 28,(3) grams ...there you go

Normally I just go to TW to get the weight but the racquet isn't there. I'm working from home this morning and only have two monitors to work with. In the office, I have three monitors so it's easy to keep a few browser windows open for getting reference information.

I m seriously considering this AG100 or the AG200 (16x19) before this, I m presently using RDX500 mid, but looking for something similar but lighter. So I was between the 200 or 100...but after reading this, I m pretty much incline to the AG100.

i have never hit with the AG200 (16X19) only the MFil (16X19) and it is a different feeling racket, it has a 100" head and was not that stable with a weird weight distribution to it. I would like to hit with the AG one however as its specs are different than the MFil one.

you are exactly right, in doubles i never had to hit out that often and it was so great at the net that all i really did was serve and volley all night. you cant tell anything about a racket until you play with it for a while against different competition in singles and doubles. i am anxious to see how i play a long match in singles and how my focus holds up with the small head size.

one weird thing i noticed was that i had to concentrate a bit on just smoothing my swing with the AG100. since it was lighter than im used to i fould myself really whipping it through the hitting zone instead of gliding it through as i do with my AG200 for example. i felt like i could whip it through and hit it anywhere on the court which is nice but it can lead to some mishits as well. when i was hit a heavy ball i just smoothed it through the zone and the racket reponded beautifully, on the slower balls is where i found myself whipping it a bit too much and i pulled a few wide. i also blocked a few serve returns long as the powerful strings took over on those. i adjusted to that as the match went on however.

Thank for the great review! Can you compare the AG100 to the Redondo Mid? Thx.
thanks, i used to own the redondo mid (RM) but i sold it because i was never playing with it. the RM is a nice racket and i could serve great with it but could not produce the same kind of spin as i can with the AG. the RM felt a tad stiffer for some reason although i don't know the specs off the top of my head, the RM was stiffer than the Redondo MP which i still play sometimes. the RM could hit some great flat bombs both on forehand and serve but i couldnt generate much spin with it and i would hit a lot of long balls with it if i wasnt dead on my game. the RM is a great feeling racket and is definately heftier than the AG100. the AG100 is so easy to whip around without tiring you out it was nice as i am used to very heavy rackets.

the AG is lighter than the RM and could potentially benefit from some lead in the hoop but i don't really want to mess with it too much. as people always say on here even if a racket is light, if you hit the sweetspot the racket will remain solid against even a heavy ball. since its a small head if you hit it on the strings anywhere it feels pretty solid, the sweet spot is nice for a 90" frame and larger than the sweetspot on the FXP mid for instance. similar sweetspot to the RDX mid.

Can you compare the AG100 to other racquets in terms of power level? I´m also curious about the specs of this racquet, especially stiffness.
i would put the power level similar to a pure control or nblade or maybe a ncode 95. those are three that come to mind. as far as the specs, i used to have a site in english that had all the specs but i cant find it now, here are the specs from a german website.

Dunlop aero gel 100 outstanding control and length precision
* Racquet surface: 580 cm² (90")
* Framework strength: 19 mm (beam)
* Weight: 315 g unbesaitet (unstrung)
* Balance: 320 mm
* Length: 685 mm (27")
* Strings: 16 x 19
* Grasp strengths: L1-L4 (grip sizes)

well i just found out from the seller that my racket came with head rip control 17 strung at only 55lbs. that would explain a lot of the power and the string movement. i think i will have it restrung to today with luxilon ace 18 at 54lbs mains and 52lbs crosses and see how it plays with that.

Thanks, sorry I have you confused with another user apparently, there was a poster that said he bought one (aerogel 200 16x19) from Europe and it had something like a 296 SW (STRUNG !) and felt way too light and/or unstable so he sold it. Sorry for the confusion.

im not sure what the swingweight is but maybe someone can calculate it with the specs listed below...

# Headsize: 90 sq in
# Unstrung Weight: 315g
# Strung Weight: 330g
# Balance: 320mm
# Beam Width:19mm
# String Pattern: 16 x 19
# Stringing Tension Range:55-65lbs

how much headlight in points is 320mm?

if i calculated this right i think the racket is around 7.2 points headlight and thus the swingweight would be around 325. is this accurate?

I visited t e n n i s n u t s dot com, a UK company where they have the full Aerogel line, and the cost plus shipping to the US for a new AG frame is $206. Not bad, really, when some racquets on TW are almost 200 bucks.

i think the AG100 may be a tad lighter if i remember correctly, i played with the RDX mid only once for two sets. it is a solid racket with a nice sweet spot for a mid. i serve better with the AG100 however. i liked the RDX mid though.

i bought the AG200 new from europe before they were available here and it was around $200, the AG100 i just bought was purchased slightly used from a guy here on TW and i paid $150 shipped.

now, i did play singles tonight with the AG100 and i won in three sets (5-7, 6-0, 6-3) i played a really good guy tonight who told me that he had not lost since he joined our club last january. the final three games he had trouble holding his racket because he had a huge blister on his hand :)

i served great again and he kept talking about that during and after the match. i found myself playing pretty conservatively tonight as i was afraid to go for too much until i got comfortable with the racket. i played very solid and got back balls i normally wouldnt due to its manuverablility.

i love this racket! had a blast playing with it and i didnt get tired even after a grueling 3 setter that lasted forever. the first and third sets lasted forever. we blasted the ball back and forth all night. it was a blast to play with this racket. by the middle of the second set and the third set i was getting more comfortable with my backhand and waiting a while longer and really hitting it solid which was my main concern.

everything i found last night with it in doubles just carried over tonight. i could serve bombs with crazy spin, great forehands and later solid backhands, the first set i was leaving them a tad short sometimes due to swinging a bit early and casting on them. this was due to the lighter SW than i am used to. like last night i framed a few but almost everyone of them stayed in play and made for a difficult hit for my opponent.

i cut out the strings from last night and had it strung with some new stuff called luxilon flouro or something like that. it was 17 gauge as they were out of the ace 18. it felt good, more soft than some of that line and it produced plenty of spin. this setup wasnt as powerful as the setup before which was head rip control at 55lbs. i think i could almost handle more power than i had tonight although it was nice just as it is.

im really excited about this racket and will play nothing but this racket for an extended period with a few differnt string setups just for fun and take it from there. so far i am 2-0 with the AG100 :) couldn't have played much better tannis than i did tonight against a very tough opponent, im pumped!!!

Mileslong, have you ever played with the PS 6.0 95? If you have, would you be kind enough to compare them?

you lost the first set 5/7 then won 6/0, was that due to the racquet or because the guy you played developed blisters
very funny, after the war we had in the first set that lasted like 1.5 hours he was done, i jumped out 3-0 in the second before he could regroup then he threw his best shot with him serving and when i broke him 4-0 after a long game he threw his prostaff all the way from the service line against the back fence. he mailed in the rest of that set. :)

Mileslong, have you ever played with the PS 6.0 95? If you have, would you be kind enough to compare them?
i have never played with a PS 6.0 95, i would like to sometime but just never had the opportunity.

how would you compare the AG 100 to the 200G MW or more importantly to the Redondo MP?
well let's see.

Serve: AG100 hands down, i always thought that the only weakness in the 200G MW was that i didnt get a ton of kick on my kick serve with that racket. it does everything else really well but i didnt win as many cheap points serving with that racket. The RMP is similar to the MW although i think i get more kick out of it than with the MW. the AG100 just hits bombs period, kicks, slices, and you can put the ball anywhere you want, just awesome.

Forehand: at this point i would put the MW 1st in that it is so accurate and the control is so good that you would be hard pressed to find a better racket from the baseline. the RMP is good as well as it has awesome depth control but not quite as good directionally as the MW IMO. i also think the MW and the RMP are the best feeling rackets i have ever hit. the AG100 is not far behind, the only reason i dont put it higher is that i framed the ball more with it than the other two. the control is excellent, the feel is great it just has a smaller head and so you must be on your game. i didnt really frame any way out of bounce or anything however.

topspin 2H backhand: i would put the MW or RMP slightly ahead at this point however later in the match i was hitting the AG100 much better than the beginning and i think i will end up hitting it better than the other two before it is over. the SW is less so it took me a while to stay back on the ball. the plow through isnt as good as the AG200 but its still plenty. im just used to playing with really heavy rackets but by the end of the match i was hitting down the line or cross court with ease, the only thing i didnt do well early in the match was i left some of these backhands a bit short which resulted in my opponent putting them away. i was casting the racket early on but later i dialed it in.

slice: the AG100 is the best by far here, i could hit the slice backhand at will and keep it low and put it anywhere, my opponent kept trying to hit low to my backhand and then charge the net, about 4 times in a row i just whipped a hard slicer back just over the net at his waist with major backspin and he muffed 3 out of 4 then he quit doing it. the RMP needs lead and then its very good at that as well, the MW i would put 3rd here.

overheads: the AG100 easily again, due to the lighter SW its a blast to hit overheads with.

volleys: i would say the AG100 is the best here as well, its more manuverable than the other two although the RMP is a great doubles racket becauses it very manuverable and has a larger head than the AG100. for most people i would put it first here, for me i like the AG100 the best due to its extras pop.

Good win!

The 17 gauge string, the open 16x19 pattern, the lighter SW, maybe these have provided you the immediate gains.

As you say, however, your serve has taken a real leap and you are dominating with that. So next seek out the best returner at your club, or the best retriever...

Had you played with a MID before? I've had a brilliant time with the Yonex RDS 001 MID and thought that it is great on serve. However hitting those short backhands and framed forehands cost too much in matches for me.

The technology in these small(er) frames certainly adds up. And they can certainly deliver power (if not plow-through). Perhaps the Yonex 001 MID and the Dunlop AG100G show just can be done with the modern MID?

To find the racquet good in both singles and doubles is a bonus. I've always played the same racquet in both. The games are different enough without throwing another variable in there!

Will you add lead to the AG100G at all? Did you change the grip? You say it slices real well - on the defensive, and the offensive approach?

no i havent leaded it up. i have never put lead on any of my 200 series rackets, only the 300 series i demoed. these dunlops dont really need it IMO. if i did put any it might be at 3 and 9 but then i will just be making it heavier which might help on some shots but take away from others. i dont know if i will even try that or not.

Alright, thanks! Just have one more question to bother you with: What NTRP level would you say you are?
at my club i am rated a 4.5, they have been trying to move me up to 5.0 for a while now so i guess im somewhere in between.

Can You compare it to the HM 100g?
i have never hit with the HM 100G. it does feel a bit light at first compared to the AG200 but all the other guys that have swung it at my club and pro shop said that it didnt feel that light to them. i have lux strings, a dampener and an overgrip so im sure the weight must be somewhere between 11.8 and 12 oz by now.
