If Fed could replay one point...

Safin was a clumsy net player, and Federer is one of the best passers of all time. I’ll bet Fed wishes he simply ran back, turned around, and swatted a Fedhand winner.

ppl aren't giving safin enough credit. federer was totally caught off guard with that superb lob. and he didn't have time to run around and hit that shot, even if he did run around and hit that shot, there is no guarantee he would have won that point, because safin is a solid net player, not a clumsy one.

There was a bunch of options.
Crucial moment, poor decisions which cost him the title.

What do you think his order of options are here? I would've faked the inside out fh drop shot (telegraphed it a bit) then sliced deep up the line to the same spot he hit, giving me more time to come in with Nole ideally floundering off balance. Alternatively just take it on the bh and hit deep to the centre of his bh court and build a rally where the pressure's on Novak, dare him to hit dtl and take your chance if an obvious one presents itself. It was a bit of a sucker punch from Novak, it was just beyond service line depth.

I noticed Fed leant line, I guess he wanted to avoid the even easier push pass dtl after your opponent has clearly commited to covering x court.

Just rip a FH to either wing like a real man. Instead he hit a p*ssy shot and paid the price to the pusher.

He could have gone aggressive and more to the lines on the FH as Djokovic was moving too quickly to the right. He could have stayed back if he did not want to do that.

Even Rafa resorts to drop shotting on a fairly regular basis on grass against guys like Del Potro and Djokovic, doesnt always rip a fh on the short ball. But yeah, not a bad idea, as long as you rip it enough "the pusher" cant hurt you with his bh dtl.

Yeah, fact is that Fed was afraid to rip with his FH all match. He played percentage tennis against the percentage tennis GOAT and lost. Someone on his team told him "FH drop shot and you will win 87.5% of points." Well, he got burned. And he choked on match points.

He didn't play freely on the big points. We know that Fed has talent, but he didn't show it ON THE BIG POINTS.

I'd have to watch the last few sets to comment, he ripped a few forehand winners in the first couple of sets. But is this the third time he's lost from match point up against Novak in a major? Im assuming Novak won his 1st match point? Albeit 1 of 3 he had up his sleeve in the buster. I think it needs to be a super breaker in the decider like at the AO. Its better than the cricket world cup though where England drew the final and won!
