If Thiem was playing in the 90's

He'd probably have won RG three times.

He's as good on clay as Prime Jim Courier. He's better than Agassi on clay, who had a very favourable draw when winning it in 1999. He's better than 1996 winner Kafelnikov aswell, though probably not as good as 1995 Muster.

Point is, when playing in Nadals era every top claycourter gets severely underestimated, due to Nadal taking most the titles. People criticised Federer for not winning at Paris, when he'd have won 3 or 4 french opens in the 80's or 90's. As would Djokovic. Mury GOAT himself would have won the French with Agassis 1999 draw.

It's not fair to judge todays players by their clay court titles, when Nadal is such an extreme confounding variable. Gaudio won the French while Thiem has not, that says it all.

On the flip side if Nadal had played in the 90's the likes of Brughera and Courier would have won zero French Opens. If he'd played in the 80's Mats Wilander would have won zero.

Federer and Djokovic are in the top 8 clay courters of all time abilitywise.
