Is Djokovic Chasing Federer’s Slam Record? You Betcha!

52, since he also needs to pass Fed by the same number Fed passed Pete times two and yada yada
Seriously, I don't get this insecurity or optimism, from both some Fed and Nole fans. 20 is so far away from 16. I wish Novak himself doesn't obsess too much about it, it's just too much pressure. It's not like he can win more than 1 at the time anyway.

Federer's gonna win the chess match.

Playing the "game" at another level.

He and his team are slowly but surely moving toward taking the reins of tennis as well. :)

Agree, though I am glad he has set that goal for himself. Whether he gets there or not is not even the most important thing for me as a fan. I just think it makes him far less likely to start hugging trees again. Slumps and age catching up is ok, but that period when there were motivation issues on top of injuries, that was really ugly. Don't want to see that ever again. Competitive Djokovic is the best Djokovic, win or lose.

You have exposed a reality. No one can read the future, but it is extremelly likely that Djokovic will end up with more Majors than both Federer and Nadal. The reason is obvious: Djokovic is better than Nadal and current Federer on grass and hard courts. And 3 of 4 Slams are outside clay, which means Nadal is less favorite than Djokovic in 3 of 4 Slams.

The real race is for the number 2 spot in number of Slams. I believe (or I want to believe) that Nadal has a chance to surpass Federer's Grand Slam record by adding more Roland-Garros titles.

So, in my view, these are the most likely scenarios:

1. Djokovic with more Slams than Fedal, and Nadal with more Slams than Federer (53% chances)
2. Djokovic with more Slams than Fedal, and Federer with more Slams than Nadal (45% chances)
3. Federer with more Slams than both Djokovic and Nadal (1% chances)
4. Nadal with more Slams than both Federer and Djokovic (1% chances)

This is an excellent post. I agree with everything, and I feel it summarizes the slam race very well.
Let's keep this post for posterity and we can quote it after a few years, because I really feel what you said will materialize.
Well done Sir.

Would love to see either Nadal or Djokovic get past 20 but it’s not that easy, particularly for Djokovic. When he was unstoppable and was winning everything it all came to a grinding halt after his FO win. It’s mentally and physically draining to keep playing at such a level. His level could very well have dropped off the back of the Wimbledon win a few months ago. Let’s see how the US Open pans out for him. He may very well struggle and Nadal will pick up the pieces and grab no 19. Anything is possible.
