Is it possible that I need 32.8 feet (10 meters) of string for 1 racket?

Hi guys,

So I started to measure how many meters of string I need for 1 racket, because I was waisting too much string per racket.

Today I strung a Dunlop Aerogel Elite (16X19). I measured out 35,76 feet (10,9 meters) of string for my one piece job. After I completed the racket I very was surprised that I still had an excess of 2,95 feet (0.9 meter) of string, which means I could have completed the racket with 32,8 feet (10 meters) of string.

Now I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake measuring out the string, because it seems to me that 10 meters of string could never be enough string for 1 racket.

Anybody knows if this is possible? I know for example that my Babolat Pure Drive needs around 35,43 feet (10,8 meters) of string and this racket also has a 16x19 string pattern and the same head size (100 sq inch), so that's why I have a hard time believing I measured correctly.

Depends on the racquet, tension, string and stringer but yes certainly possible. I have an Aerogel 4D 300 which is a 98 16x19 pattern and often have had ~8 feet of synthetic gut left over from a 40ft set.

That said... string is 660' reels are cheap. I rather throw away some string rather than come up short.

you didn't say what string you used - some strings stretch a lot, others don't

4 knots need more extra length than 2 knots too

i'll stick with 40-42' or 12-12.5m... less risk of running short.
CBF'd redoing whole job &/or mucking about with clamps/knots
trying to extend a too-short end to reach the tensioner.

I used the yonex polytour pro string. 40-42 inch is way too much for me,that would mean I lose at least 2 string jobs per reel

Ok so I probably measured correctly then, thanks...

yeah i got away with 33 feet from the end of a reel once on a prince exo3 grahite mid and had about a foot to spare so i see no reason what you're saying wouldn't work.

like everyone else is saying though if you do the math its not worth the risk. there are benefits of working with less string (less wear on the mains when pulling the crosses through, no twisting if its a poly/gut) but really its nothing to fret about. just measure out 36 and you should be good for just about any midsized racquet, even 18x20's.

Thanks....I know it's best to play safe, but I think it's a good idea to remember how many feet of string you used for 1 racket when you know you're going to string the same racket again some day. Especially when you're using reels of expensive strings

Here is something I think is more important. If you have a 16 mains 98 si racket how many feet doers it take for each side (or short side.) similarly how much string does it take for different types of string and for different numbers of crosses for specific size rackets. And how much string is needed for 18 main rackets or the short side on an ATW pattern.

I have found that each side of a 16 main racket needs 9' and 18 main rackets need 10'. For different stringing machines it could take more or less is you use a starting clamp bridge to tension the last string.

EDIT: Try it for yourself, use 16 racket lengths of string and 4 racket lengths for the short side for a 16 main racket. Add one fort for the short side for an 18 main racket. If you're stringing two piece after tying off the mains cut off the long side tag end and use a starting knot to start your crosses. Two piece does not take any more than a few inches more than one piece that way as you only have minimal waste with tag ends. That waste occurs on the tag ends of the short side and last cross just like a one piece.

You often need to have about 1 foot of extra string at the end to reach the tie off grommet and tie good knots.
