Is it possible to be competitive and great friends

I would like to think so because it's beautiful .....but I don't think it works.

Navratilova said she was great friends with evert . However Navratilova realized she must seperate fron evert if she was going to have a competitive rivalry.

Sampras and Agassi were not the best of friends.

Mcenroe hated Lendl and vice versa.

Mac and Connors also hates each other .

Borg is an anomaly because everyone lives him ...except Connors who said he would "chase Borg to the ends of the earth " or something like that.....

But even though Borg and Mcenroe were friends.....Borg ended up quitting in their 2 year rivalry......so I can't say it worked.

I think what Fed needed was some animosity to dominate Nadal.....fed didn't seem to have the fire to get him through fifth sets. A little anger may have pushed him through

So, it's another one of your threads to bash Federer. I must say you are very creative in the sense that you always come up with different ways to ridicule Federer.

You guys are the most hypersensitive bunch I have ever seen. It borders on insanity.

How on earth am I bashing Fed?

He obviously is losing the slam h2h 8-2.......that's not new news.

And I'm just saying what he might have done differently .

How is this bashing Fed??? In fact when the hell have I ever bashed Fed????

Rather your reactions are abnormal.

Any thread that doesn't say Fed is God is somehow bashing him.

Supposedly, Murray and Nadal are actually close friends behind the scenes. The rest of the big four are friendly but don't have really 'deep' relationships.

Its difinitely possible. Look at the relationship between Federer and Nadal. Watch them in the promotion video for "hit for Africa" shooting or this years footage of No.1's gathering party. Federer and Nadal are talking animated against each other. I think they suit each other. Federer the animated fun guy and Rafa the reserved and relaxed guy. They respect each other so much.

I think you can be friends and competitive. On a much lesser scale, I play to win against my friends and no matter who wins or loses, we're buddies during and after the match - applauding each other's shots.

I don't take it easy on them and the reverse is true.

Can it be done at the pro level? I think so.
Murray, Djoker, Nadal I think are friends?

Yeah I love that video . It's a Beaitiful thing to see don't get me wrong.

The problem though is that I think If there were some animosity fed would do a little better ......sadly :-(

I actually think Federer and Nadal hate each other. And no, you cannot be great friends and be competitive on the ATP tour. You can however be somewhat of a friend like Murray and Nadal as long as you don't develop a fierce rivalry like what Murray and Nadal have now.

Nadal doesn't seem to have any animosity towards Fed yet doesn't lack the fire. So I don't see why it should be different for Fed.

You got that wrong, it was regarding Novak's rumored wedding, not Nadal's.

No, I just made a typo. I was comparing the bs story of Murray being Novak's best man (way before Novak had gotten engaged) to the story of Nadal getting married. Both just bs, that's all.

Yet Nadal doesn't seem to have any animosity towards Fed yet doesn't like the fire. So I don't see why it should be different for Fed.

Well it was not always that way......I think Nadals charm got to him or Nadals strategy?

In the beginning Fed was not so nice about Nadal.....he called him one dimensional , accused him of getting coaching , said their rivalry was not really a rivalry etc etc......

Nadal simply responded with calling Fed the goat and only saying wonderful things.

Fed tried to hate Rafa but just couldnt.

I think that ended up hurting Fed.....because when you have a little anger you play with a little more fire....especially in the fifth .

No, you can't be super competitive against someone you are great friends with, just like two people can't be great friends if they are attracted to each other, it would eventually ruin the friendship :D

Gee, what's up with my typing today?. "Lack" not "like".

Anyway, about the bolded, Fed wasn't so nice at the beginning and yet he went to a 1-6 deficit. And he won their five setter at Miami.

Rafa didn't really respond by saying only nice things, hehe, he basically called Fed a sore loser after the coaching comments, sometime before RG 2006.

Also, didn't Federer go to greet Rafa back in 25 somewhere?. He also never has really stopped sometimes making some not so nice comments about Rafa, just think of his "laughing for 10 minutes" comment after Rafa lost in Wimbledon in 2012. I think he's probably just a rather blunt person.
