Is this the year Federer retires?

Usually in his speeches he always says he will be back next year. Besides that he got so emotional, which could be another sign of him retiring this year. Am I seeing ghosts or do you guys have the same feeling?

Just to be clear: I definitely hope he does not retire. I'm a Federer fan.

He hinted at not coming back in his AO speech last year... As long as he enjoys winning, he will be there for us

I got that impression.

Hoping he sticks around to pass Rosewall and becomes the only guy to win one at age 40 in the Open Era, not get slaughtered by some young "Jimmy Connors," but I did get up at 1:30AM my time to see him play, and will probably do so every time for the next couple of years. Watching live is just different than looking at tape. So much more drama and fun. Here's to Fed sticking around past 40!!!

He's not going to retire with Nadal still snapping at his heels in the slam count department.

He is not going anywhere for a long time yet, especially when he is winning slams at a faster rate than even Nadal is. He will want to put that record as far out of reach as possible, not just from Nadal, but from future players.

Pretty sure it had slipped his mind,Lol.
he almost forgot to congratulate Marin's camp, his own camp too iirc.
I don't see him retiring untill 2020 tbh unless a major injury threatens.
And what's up with these threads popping out every time Fed wins something? ;)
Because for some reason a lot of people have this "retiring while on top" nonsense bashed into their brain just because a couple of people have done it in the past.

I didn’t think about that until he started in with the water works...
No one knows, I hope he hangs around for a couple more years, but that’s just me being selfish. He’s definitely in the conversation with Ruth, Jordan, & Ali.
So lucky to be able to see this happening.

Correct.

If Nadal gets a bit more judicious about his scheduling and avoids burnout (I think he will this year onward), he should still have a very good chance to catch Federer even if he wins another major or two.

Rafa's got the French locked up for another two years at the very least, has a very good chance going into the USO and should be a strong contender at the AO too.

Roger is ahead for the monent but Bull is five years younger and still playing at a high level.

The only way it is truly over in my eyes is if Nadal fails to win RG this year, and then Federer wins W. At 21 - 16, you can forget about Nadal winning six from that point on, and historically, once he loses RG, he does not do well in the following slams, so it could write him off for the rest of the year. Then next year, he will be just that much more older, and the task just that much more tougher.

Idk about Nadal limiting his schedule. Seems like he benefits from a lot of reps.

i thought so at the end of last year. but now i'm not so sure. maybe he really will play until he's 40. and that would
be just fine with me.

If he didn't retire after winning against Nadal last year to get his 18th Grand Slam, then he won't retire this year, nor the next few years, barring major injury.

I honestly believe that the 2020 Wimbledon will be his final tourney !!!

Maybe Fed can do a few exhibitions matches after with Djoker and Nadal and Murray lol

Completely overrated, mostly by journos who think it’s part of the fairytale. As if being beaten at the end of your career means your memory gets wiped of all the times you lifted the trophy...

Most journos would have had Fed retire after Wimbledon 2012. I can’t even be bothered to list all the amazing achievements he wouldn’t have had if he’d followed the conventional wisdom that tennis players fall off a cliff post 30...

I reckon any lengthy injury might just prompt a decision. But while he’s healthy and his family is ok with it, crack on Fed.

No man, the last grand slam he is gonna win will be Wimbledon and no other grand slams want to be last to host Federer so everyone gonna try to have him win as his last

God bless him. I hope he does whatever he and his wife decide are best for him and the family.

I'd love to see him keep playing, but even if he steps away, I think we'll see and hear more from the Federer family in the future.

I think 2020 will be the Farewell Tour. 18/19 he continues to shoot for more titles, should the body hold up.

I think he’ll play until the Olympics, I think he really wants that gold medal.
