hi again all, I have another question about a sw forehand. An instructor told me to step into the ball instead of hitting open stance, when doing so he also said to keep my knees bent while hitting and to keep them this way throughout my stroke. I feel like I am "arming the ball" when doing this, so my question is, do you push up with your knees while hitting? Hope the question makes sense, thx!

You can. It all depends on how high the ball is and how you want to hit it, flat or topspin. I think rising up also gives a little explosive power to your shot.

Tough call because I'm kinda confused why your instructor's teaching you a neutral/closed-stanced FH with a SW grip.

If you're practicing a WW-style FH with SW grip and a neutral/open stance, you want to "sit and lift." That is, let your butt drop backwards, as if you were sitting "back" onto a chair that was a little behind you.

This in itself sets up an automatic unit turn, and as part of that, your knees will bend as a result.

That's the "lift" part. The lowering of the butt helps to set the unit turn. When you initiate the forward swing, the butt lifts off the chair, causing the knees to unbend, and then your torso to rotate, etc.

There's an order or sequence you need to follow with the kinetic chain. Power starts from the lower body and transfers upwards into the arm.

My coach told me to use an open/semi open stance because it will help me get recover better, and I bend my knees and push up/forward with them for that extra power. Really does help get the balls deep into the court.

For the most part and not considering isolated events, you should rise through the ball. Rising naturally and allowing your body to work will help create lift in your shot. This is not the same as jumping although jumping is an advanced move.

The kinetic chains feeds off itself sending moving energy through the body to the racquet. Bending your knees allows you to get the racquet below the ball without drooping your racquet too much although it is reasonably okay to do this on the forehand.

Bending your knees allows you to create energy and send it upward.

I dont know what your coach is trying to do, but to bend your knees and not allow them to work naturally needs to be explained. He might be isolating something and engraining the bend in the knee. So long as he has a plan is fine. But to keep the knees bent and not allow them to work naturally is suspect.

The lift or rising in the shot is natural and acts sort of like a spring in your movement hitting a ball. Take a look at these clips.
