What was the last great most exciting year (taking the whole season into account) as far as great matches go? Was it 2009?

Austrlian- Absolutely fantastic between the Nadal/Verdasco and Fed/Nadal match. Both great quality.
French- Not much of a final but some great matches beforehand
Wimbledon- Fed/Roddick great match.
USO- Fed/Del Potro solid match.

Among other great matches that year

There are some other good matches in 2009 too, but as a whole it was a very unpredictable solid year of tennis. Much like 2008 before it.

Hmm....a thread from 90's clay not about weak completion...or diminishing Federer.

Are you okay 90?

2009 was a year of surprises.

Nadal winning a hard court major with Fed around , Fed winning a clay major with Nadal around and a 20 year old having a phenomenal summer to win the USO beating Fed and Nadal and that too with a 2,2 and 2 scoreline.

Agree totally.

It has been boring ever since , except 2012 Wimbledon.

Djokovic usurping peak Fedal in 2011 is possibly the greatest year in sports entertainment history.

Djokovic beating Federer in a Wimbledon final, something no one other than peak Rafa has been able to do, falling down on the grass and having a taste of its sweet dewy goodness. June 2014 was epic.

Thread is unbelievable and incredibly disrespectful to Djokovic.

Fed's decline started right after AO 2010 losing several matches to Baghdatis , Gulbis, Berdych, Soderling, Davydenko, Melzer and so many other players he never lost before.

Nadal was no longer the player he was in 2010.

Beating a 33 year old Fed at Wimbledon is a great achievement but nothing comparable to what Nadal did in 2007/2008 and Roddick in 2009.

Dude get over Djokovic... Someone says they prefer Wilson to Head, and you'd claim it's disrespectful to Novak. My god, get a grip.

I agree with 90s Clay. I think that year in particular was historic for what Rafa and Roger were doing... Djokovic's 2011 was impressive too, I think it's not to the level of 2009 because of the historic implications that were not really there.

I think 2012 was pretty unique. 4 different GS winners. Interesting Olympics. No single player dominated the field. Every tournament was a tossup, yet there were many strong contenders. Also, the GS's all had a story. Not to mention the rivalries among the big 4 were at their tightest.

AO- Possibly the greatest final ever
FO- Djoker's first FO final
Wim- The maestro's rise to #1
USO- Murray's first GS title

Madrid Blue Clay as a whole (not great but something new)

There were also many great match-ups in other events. Federer - Nadal Indian Wells SF
Isner - Djokovic Indian Wells SF
Federer - Del Potro Olympic SF
Federer - Del Potro Basel F
Djokovic - Murray Shanghai F
Federer - Djokovic WTF F

The only thing that was a let down about 2012 was Novak's clay form. He didn't build off of 2011 at all. Actually regressed a lot and the clay season went back to business as usual.

2008 and 2009 were both exciting years with lots of contenders. 2007 was pretty good too even if Federer was dominant, there was the exciting Nadal-Federer Wimbledon final, Nalbandian's great indoor run (although a shame he wasn't able to be in the WTF due to his earlier year), Ferrer's surge to being a contender for the first time ever, and Gonzalez's Australian Open run.

It has gradually gotten a bit worse almost each year since then. This year is probably the most boring and overall weak year since 2006.

For any year to be exciting now, we need a new winner at FO. It is getting so stale.
Nadal can't dominate the FO forever. I think Djokovic has a legit shot (as always) to take the crown for the first time next year.

I think Nadal will win the next 3 French Opens, and Djokovic will win his first (and only) finally in 2018.

Plenty of great matches last year too. This is the first year that I've found there to be a lack of a lot of good matches.
