Linear vs. Rotary Gripper (Mutual Power)

(I had this posted in the wrong section.)

Can someone explain the advantages of the different types of grippers on a drop weight machine. And what is a uni-directional cluster? I'm looking at Mutual Power's Hercules line. Does anyone have any thoughts on this company? Are they affiliated with Silent Partner? Thanks.

The string wraps around a drum to grip on a rotational gripper. On a linear grip, the string is grabbed and pulled in a straight line. Some people don't want a rotational gripper because of the possiblility of kinking strings. With some experience you learn how to handle the string and not kink it. Advantage of the rotational gripper is you get a very positive grip and little adjustment if any is needed. Disadvantage is kinking. Advantage of linear gripper is there is no bending of the string. Disadvantage is you may have to adjust the gripper to grab different gauges of strings. Linear grippers with diablos use a rotation around the diablo, so there can be possible kinking. Either gripper is fine if used properly.

Silent Partner is in Canada. Mutual Partner is in Houston. I believe Mutual Partner had some affiliation with Maxline/Eagnas at one time.

IMO it's a matter of preference.....

I've used both extensively..... the drum did not kink my string..... the only downside to the drum is you need a longer piece of string to engage the gripper compared to a linear gripper.

The linear gripper on the mutual power pull on the string but would still rotate with the drum as the centre. As a result, the string still incompletely wrap around the drum. But I think it is still less harsh than simply using the Rotary gripper.
