Long toss for shoulder strengthening

Any baseball players here? I want to strengthen my shoulder muscles doing long toss drills and was curious if anyone had any pointers.

Not a baseball player, but I've seen people doing long-toss stuff. This thread is desperately calling out for LeeD to chime in because he's very proud of the distance he could toss in his youth.

From what I've seen, the players do a lot of thrower's 10 type exercises to strengthen the shoulder and they generally work on fully warming up the shoulder joint first and then throwing very relaxed to start. I'm not sure why the long-toss throwers tend to have fewer shoulder problems than the pitchers. I'm not a fan of a lot of throwing for shoulder health, but some people can do it without issues.

For lack of a better, more precise explanation, long toss drills relate to two people standing far apart (maybe starting at 100 feet apart) and throwing a baseball a "long" ways to develop shoulder strength.

As the throws becomes easy, the players move further apart. The theory is that the light weight of the baseball minimizes shoulder strain compared to throwing a heavier item (like a football), but throwing the ball long helps build shoulder muscles.

Instead of working on a long baseball throw, you should work on watching NLBewell's motion.
He get's the rackethead to accelerate to it's utmost potential, using a somewhat short swing motion. And he's of average height. 5'11" or so.
RacketHEAD speed is the key on any serve. A fast hand does little, except tire yourself out trying to hit the fastest possible serves.
It's the whip effect, trebochet motion that accelerates the head of the racket.
Practice shadow swings, looking at your reflection in a window or mirror and LISTEN to the highest pitch sound of your swings.
The reason outfielder's don't get arm problems nearly as much as pitchers is because they don't throw hard nearly as often. Most fly ball catches are followed by underhand simple tosses to the 2nd baseman in short outfield, a distance of less than 150'.
Roberto Clemente was claimed to have the longest throw in an actual game. Something along the likes of 380' in the air, but it was a LOW throw, not a distance throw.
Outfielders are taught since little league to throw LOW, no higher than maybe 30' off the ground, so it covers the distance as quickly as possible, and a cutoff man can catch it and accelerate the speed with another, more accurate throw.
If Roberto wanted purely to throw for distance, he'd throw it up at a 40 degree angle, maybe 90' or 100' high, and the ball would go well over 400' in the air.
Look at javelin throws as an example of a long throw.

Oh, and yes, I was coached in playing outfield from little league through junior high school, went to baseball camps, and listened to the pros talking.

Oh, for WildVolley....:)
In junior high, I could throw about 330' in the air.
Around age 50, closer to 350" in the air.
At age 61, I walked over to the old grammar school, tossed a SOFTBALL over 190' in the air that hit a fence SIXTY FEET HIGH about 8' from the top. First and ONLY try, as any following throw would go over the fence and hit JoanWaserkrug's house windows across the street.
Haven't thrown a football in over 3 years now, but last time was 50 yards, lightpole to lightpole at the BerkeleyMarina, with NO warmup tosses or any stretching of any kind.

Pickle9, I'm allergic to your ignorance.
Out of 8th grade, the track coach from LincolnHigh recruited me to throw the javelin. The only way I made any baseball team was my catching, speed, and throwing accurately REALLY far. I bat like I was blind. They dropped javelin and discuss in 1963, when I entered high school.
YOU cannot throw far. Doesn't mean everyone else cannot throw far. I never played pitcher, because that takes ONE step accuracy, and I've already explained to you ignorant folks how to throw far....and it's not a pitcher's throw, a catcher's throw, OR a quarterback's throwing motion. It's a 5 step outfielder's throw.
Ignorant is sticking your head under the dirt so you won't see the truth. There are better people out there than just YOU.

Sorry op for derailing your thread. I haven't played baseball since little league. But if you want I can try and make something up or see what google says.

So, what position did you play?
That clues us in on your strengths and weaknesses. I mostly played center field, batted 6-9th, and was pulled in night games.

Guess your league had 4 outfielder's. Ours had 3.
"1st or last". Basically means you are full of bullcrap. You didn't play little league, or any other league baseball.
Of course, you're just lying.
Girl's teams with 4 outfielder's always place the 4th of at short left center.
You are a B S 'er.
Tell me I"m wrong.

Or last as in everyone on the team had to bat so that could be anywhere from 10th to 18th on a given evening. Oops.

So, you're telling me this was before your memory was working, yet you knew you were a 4th outfielder, playing right center? Where no ball goes?
And you were not a starting 9, yet everyone rotated thru for their turn at bat?
Are you sure this is little leaque?
Maybe the rules were different in the '50's when I played little league, so maybe you're right, but you should remember lots of stuff from when you were 12.
At least you should remember the stuff you cared about.

The "oops" was for you trying to call me out but just looking like a total jackass. Yeah, I don't know if that is the norm around the country but when i played in our local league, every kid had to bat in order and play at least 2 (I think) innings in the field. Travel team was regular, like Williamsport.

Keep trying. Maybe ask about what I do for a living or if I have any friends or girlfriend or what level of tennis I play to discredit me and distract people from the illusion of ******** you spout on a daily basis.

I would pay to find out what is going on inside your head and whether you really think people believe you. I'm sure you think people are in awe of your stories and get a good laugh with you but really they are just laughing AT you.

Thinking of it now, it's just as pathetic that I'm taking the time to make this post.

What do you do for a living?

Do you have any boyfriends?

What level of tennis do you play?

Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?

Do you like pickles?

How far can you throw a pickle?

Have you ever shoved a whole pickle in your boyfriends..........shoes?

To pay bills and save for retirement I work for an engineering company. Structural engineering for solar energy systems, house raisings, building construction, and whatever else comes in. But I live for tennis, cold glasses of diet coke, the internet, and long walks in battery park caressing Dali's thigh and other man parts.

I have many boyfriends. Jolly and I make an awesome couple.

I am a recreational 4.0 GOAT.

Long story short, no, I have never been to a Turkish prison but that is not for a lack of trying.

Actually, I hate pickles. Interesting, huh?

I've only thrown a pickle as far as I need to, which is 1-3 feet, on to Jolly's plate.

I've never shoved anything into anyone's shoes...except for that time I played with Dali in upstairs men's locker room at the NTC.
