Los Angeles Laker Sasha Vujacic just locked down tennis hottie Maria Sharapova ... proposing marriage to her with a massive engagement rock to rival any Lakers championship ring.


Sources tell TMZ the pair -- who were first spotted holding hands about a year ago -- got engaged Tuesday after Sasha popped the question at his home in Manhattan Beach, CA.

Maria's already been spotted out wearing the ring -- we've seen it and trust us ... even Vanessa Bryant would be impressed by the future Mrs. Vujacic's ginormous diamond.

In completely unrelated news ... Sasha's been on the Lakers' bench recovering from a concussion.

So that's a Sasha-Masha combo? Wonderful.

The guy should have plenty of time to spend with her. He plays about 10 minutes a game and misses a ton. That kinda sounds like Sharapova's game these days, too.

Vujacic isn't the brightest of the bunch on the basketball court. His slovenian rival Dragic, however, is brilliant.

Congrats to both. I've always thought Vujacic kind of looks like Rafa. Since she couldn't have the real thing she went for a look a like. 8)

What on earth is it about these Russian women athlete's that marry and/or have children in the prime of their professional careers? Didn't work for Anna Kournikova and where is Myskina these days?

Mother Marjorie has been enjoying watching Maria climb her way back into contention after that awful shoulder injury, only to see that a marriage could possibly distract her from her rightful place as the future number one.

The ring is to die for, but her career might suffer. Mother Marjorie wonders what dress she'll pick and who will be at the wedding? Hint: betcha it won't be anyone in the top three or four.

She knows the end of her career is around the corner, and desires something that has a chance (unlike tennis) of giving her a taste of satisfaction.

It's not as bad as Yao Ming and his wife.

I mean, this guy is listed at 6'7'', probably making him a little under 6'6''. She'd have been better off with Del Potro.

I was going to say the same thing. Vujacic is ugly, annoying plus he sucks ass.... I guess they make a good couple, although Sharapova isn't ugly. :)

All women want a man who makes her feel small and feminine, so Maria didn't really have that many options other than a basketball player.

One of the best things about her being engaged is that it burns the disturbing fantasies of obsessed Sharapova fanboys such as the type seen on boards like TW. No more copy+pasting their photos next to hers and thinking "uhhhh one day...it will come true! Oh Maria! Maria!"

lakers is trading vujacic as a part of the multi-player deal to new jersey nets. this guy really made sure he gets engaged to sharapova while he was a laker. i wonder what sharapova is thinking right now :)

It’s best for Vujacic to go to New Jersey so he can have some playing time. I don’t think he was thrill sitting on the bench since the Lakers are flooded with players playing his position. And Vujacic had no idea that he was going to be traded so don’t think for second that he knew it all along. Why would Maria have any problem with him playing in New Jersey? Is the city that bad in compare to LA?

sorry if i offended u or something. no problem playing with nets except that lakers is lakers, didn't u see the smiley face that i put?:???: it was a joke man, take it easy! vujacic probably didn't have an idea that he was going to be traded, but lakers fans did :)
