Maxim Touch 16 vs Gosen micro 16 ? advice?

Trying out some different racquets and string combos to see if i can find something I like. Currently trying out a Wilson Hyper Prostaff 5.0 with Maxim Touch 16 strung at 58. it felt pretty good after playing for an hour or so.

I always used 16g in my HS day because I broke strings every couple days. It seems most on here use 17 for more playability and spin so I was thinking of trying it.

I have some gosen 17. Should I go with same tension for comparison sake or lower tension because it is stiffer than maxim or higher tension because the 17 will have higher playability.

Obviously the best comparison would be some maxim 17 which I have on order, but won't be here until late next week and i am playing 2x before then so this is the only string i have. (along with some gosen 16)

I'm familiar with all gauges of Gosen synthetic and the 17 guage Maxim Touch. At the same tensions the Maxim Touch is way softer and way more powerful than any guage of Gosen at the same tension. I also notice I get less spin from the Maxim Touch but the feel is incredible. If it was me, I would increase the tension a few pounds.

Because I like the feel of the Maxim touch so much my next tests will be with the following hybrids: Maxim 17/Gosen 17, Maxim 17/Black Magic 17, and Maxim 17/Kevlar 18. I will initially try the multi in the cross for these hybrids.

The Maxim Touch is softer and offers more feel but has less spin than the OG Micro. I like the 17 gauge PSMT in the mains and Topspin Cyber Flash 1.25 in the cross.

The Maxim Touch is a much higher quality string (also a multifibre)... the OG Micro is just your basic but above average cheap nylon (solid core). I bought a reel of the OG Micro but only for hybrid purposes... I also purchased a reel of Maxim Touch... to use in any configuration... and I am not opposed to do a full setup with it.

My advice would depend on what you like about the Maxim Touch as well as your playing style. The Gosen will play crisper and I believe give you more access to spin.

Thanks for the replies. I guess my title of the thread wasn't clear. I have this maxim 16 that I like fairly well, but wanted to compare to gosen and i wanted to try 17g strings which i never have tried before. So I am going to try some maxim 17, and some gosen 17 to compare to the maxim 16.

My question was if i string the current maxim 16 @ 58, what should i do for the gosen 17 and maxim 17 just to have a fair comparison? Thanks.

I'd keep the tension the same. You're never going to be able to compare strings adequately if you change other variables. If you do want the same power level, I'd still wouldn't drop the tension of the Gosen by more than 2#.

Tennis05 : The Maxim is a little bit stiffer and crisper than NXT. I am referring to the plain NXT, which used to be Sensation I believe. Now there is NXT tour, which is a little stiffer than the plain NXT and I personally didn't like it. It felt underpowered and dead. The NXT was nice, but a little too soft for me and broke very quickly. (one set broke in about 3 hours, the other in the first 10 minutes)

I was impressed with the maxim. The first time i hit on the ball machine and it was decent, but after the break it period it felt crisp and clean, but still had good touch around the net.

Steve: I guess you are right. I really need to just string up gosen 17, maxim 17, and maxim 16 at same tension and play with them all in short period of time. Thanks.

Stiffness Rating:

Pro Supex Maxim Touch 1.25 Nylon 1.25 153
Pro Supex Maxim Touch 1.30 Nylon 1.29 190

Wilson NXT 16 Nylon 1.30 198
Wilson NXT 17 Nylon 1.24 193

I like the Maxim Touch better than NXT and the 1.25 version is less stiff.

Wow. Thanks for the info. The 17 gauge is much less stiff that the 16.

I have only played with 16g NXT and 16g Maxim, fyi Tennis005.
