Maybe the worst way to miss ALTA playoffs

One of the worst ways to miss ALTA playoffs

So this just happened to one of our teams. In our flight there were 3 divisions so the top 2 teams in each division make playoffs and the top 2 third place teams get in as a wildcard. Going into the last week we knew that if we took 2 points to make playoffs that we would be guaranteed of being one of the top 2 third place teams.

With all the rainouts the other team ended up defaulting a couple courts to us and we actually took 3 points to comfortably slip into playoffs. The other third place team took 5 points the last week so they did what they could but they came up a bit short and we got the spot. The coordinator had finalized the playoff draw. It was posted on the website. Our captain and the opposing captain had already exchanged emails working out details to start the third court a bit early.

Then last night the coordinator called our captain to inform him that there was an issue with the computer and we were no longer in playoffs. The other third place team was going to go in our place.

It turns out that in our division there was a matchup of two teams who were out of playoff contention and one team ended up defaulting a bunch of matches with the rainout on Saturday and only having until Tuesday to get the matches in. These defaults put them over 7 defaults which means they are defaulted out for the entire season and none of their results count. We had taken 5 points from this team- because they were defaulted out for the year those points were taken away from us.

Before this we were on 22 points and the other team was on 20 points. After this we were dropped to 17 points out of 30 which works out to 56.6% while the other team was on 20 out of 35 possible which is a 57.1%. By rule the team with the higher percentage of wins goes to playoffs.

Just a brutal way to miss out on playoffs.

I've seen other situations where this sort of rule can change standings late. There are several reasons a team may be defaulted like in this case and that changes the standings, but in USTA leagues if a player gets DQd late in the year and the sections rule is to reverse the matches, suddenly a loss can turn into a win for a team an voila, they jump ahead in the standings.

I agree it can be brutal, but if a team can't play their matches against everyone in the flight, that can skew the stats used for determining playoff teams too so I understand the rationale for these rules.

Ouch!

Unbelievable.

I would be so angry and disappointed.

Which level was your team? I wasn't aware that their were wildcards.

A5. I just called it a wildcard so that people would understand who may not play ALTA. There were 3 divisions in the flight so 8 teams make playoffs. The top 2 teams in each division and the top 2 third place teams.

Bummer. Sorry to hear.

Our A8 team has playoffs this weekend. I am pulling out hair trying to get a full lineup. I mean, people, come ON. We worked hard all season to get here, and now you can't miss your kid's soccer game???

AF, you returned! :)

If people are going to miss playoffs because of frivolous events, they need to re-evaluate their priorities..

A common practice is for captains to agree to make up scores to avoid defaults. It's not fair but what happened in your situation is not fair either. You might be the best 3rd place team at your level but if you have a team that defaults out of your division, you lose those points.

Gotcha, yea I hear at the higher levels there are much less divisions and farther drives.

Treo, I have heard of teams doing this as well.

Hi Overdrive! Yeah, you're one of the only good things about this board sometimes. Periodically I get disgusted and need to take a break. ;)

Got a lineup for Saturday now and maybe for Sunday if we win on Saturday...one player is injured and would rather not play. Sigh. There is a lot of crap to captaining, that's for sure!

Really? Well.. I'm flattered..

Yeah, TTW can be a pain in the rear to be on, but there is a lot of useful information on here.. :)

Do you have another player to substitute?

Sometimes sorting through all the crap to get to the occasional nugget of useful info seems like a waste of life, though. Other times I feel like I have life to waste. :)

We'll see about the sub...gotta win tomorrow first!

Boy, that stinks Spot.

We have a similar rule. If a team defaults all five courts to one team but plays another team, the defaulting team's results for the season are scratched.

I've never seen the rule come into play, but it is something I watch for when we are in playoff contention.

Sorry, mate.
