At the risk of having Rafa fans go mad at me and claim im not his real fan i do not think he will beat Medvedev.
Rafa has always had problems with guys who hit flat. Medvedev is only hitting mid twenties rpms spinrate off both wings. This is a quick court. I think back to davydenko and nalbandian and in conditions like in Montreal he struggled. He is also not yet match tight compared to Medvedev.
Medvedev has been awesome on hard courts this season and was Djokovics biggest challenge in Australia earlier in the year.
For Rafa this will be a brilliant match for his preparations even if he loses, just like the loss to Thiem in Barcelona helped him click into gear.
Its a good opportunity to get competitive match practice against a similar player to Djokovic. Even a loss today, as long as Rafa is not hammered, will really help him moving forward.
As for Medvedev if he wins today the key for him is how he follows it up. Too many of the next gen flatter to deceive.
