Red Sox took their year off after a championship per usual. Hopefully will be able to compete with the Yankees this year. It will be tough.

Patrick Corbin FAQ.

Did Corbin have a good 2019 regular season? YES.
Top 5 NL pitcher. Cy Young contender. Almost as good as teammate Strausburger.

Did Corbin underperform in the 2019 postseason? YES.
The numbers speak for themselves. Please feel free to examine them closely.
As shaky and turbulent as a Coney Island Roller Coaster. :(

mhbB89j.png

Did Corbin come on in relief of Max Scherzer to pitch 3 innings in Game 7? YES

Does Corbin's Game 7 win negate his overall disappointing postseason performance? NO.

We hold high expectations for Patrick in 2020 (almost as high as Strausburger) and continue to pray for him to finally live up to his billing in the regular season AND postseason as a Top 5 NL pitcher. The great ones are supposed to step up in October.

Reposting my award predictions
MVP - Bregman Bellinger
Rookie - Alvarez Alonso
Manager - Boone Shildt
Cy Young - Verlander deGrom

Last night rookie of the year was announced. Tonight is manager tomorrow cy Young and Thursday mvp. Alvarez won unanimously and for the second year in a row a writer decided to be an attention wh0re and vote for someone besides the obvious. Last year it was some loser from San Diego voting against deGrom this year some clown voted for Soroka over Alonso. The other 29 writers got it right. Alonso would’ve made some noise for mvp if the Mets made the playoffs. Soroka isn’t in the conversation for cy Young. deGrom should win unanimously on Wednesday but I bet some writer will vote for Ryu

also on a side note Strasburg and Martinez got robbed. Neither is a finalist for their award. I’d take Martinez over Roberts and Strasburg over Scherzer easily. Imo Strasburg should be 2nd and Martinez has a legit shot to win. They were talking about firing him in May ffs and he then goes on a winning streak that iirc was the best record in baseball from June to the end of the year.

Boone got robbed. Baldelli had a great first season but he had no adversity and a garbage division to rack up wins. Pretty much every Yankee regular besides Chapman and DJ missed time this year.

Astros are f’ed. Jomboy posted a video of the Farquhar at bat that he talked about in the interview. You can clearly hear the signal every time a change up is called and then no signal when they call for one after changing signs. Will be interesting to see if mlb considers vacating the 2017 World Series and if anyone gets suspended/banned.

I would've given it to Cole. I think voters gave too much weight to JV's no-no.

Either way, Cole wins because he's gonna get paid and doesn't have to travel with the Astros in 2020. It's going to be a nightmare for that team in other ballparks next season and I can't wait.

One expert pointed out correctly that JV was more consistent the entire regular season while Cole didn’t become unhittable until June (5-5 in April/May).

Two MVPs go to California players Trout and Bellinger. Logic is flawed to reward Trout and penalize Yelich according to whole-season contributions but I’m kinda thinking Bregman got shafted by the sign-stealing scandal.

Yasmani Grandal is the first notable free agent to make a move. 4/73 with the white Sox. Winter meetings are December 7th that’s when free agency usually gets rolling

White Sox on a mission now with an unexpected re-signing of Abreu.

They must be really p.o.'d over not getting Machado last year when they were finally ready to spend.

Super Overpay for Wheeler though. He gets paid more than Corbin despite not ever coming close to the level of performance. Only 8 mill more a year and Cole or Srtas may have been available. Maybe PHI is planning to go buck wild on pitching and still going after Cole/Stras and some other guys. The had terrible starters and worse bullpen. Maybe take a flyer on a guy like Gausman, he might get his mojo back a starter if not bring him out of the pen throwing gas. They need all kinds of help that's for sure.

I can’t even imagine their payroll when Corbin’s backload years kick in mid-decade. Lots of rookies and retreads are going to have produce. This is worse than the NFL gap between QBs and undrafted FAs.

I can't imagine Cole going anywhere but NYY. Farewell to his amazing beard.

@MeatTornado thoughts?
Can’t believe NYY, long after The Boss’ death, still enforce that silly rule of his. Even Disney allows employees to have well manicured facial hair, a policy old mustached Uncle Walt first devised well before Steinbrenner took over the Yankees.

The Gregorius defection leaves some more luxury tax room to sign Cole but I’m still believing his native California is where that ace winds up.

Before the off-season kicked off I was certain he wasn't coming to NY and would land in Anaheim. But management has actually said they're going after him aggressively, and that's something they haven't said in a long time, so I believe them.

But if any team is willing to shoot themselves in the foot with a massive overpay on the back-end, it's the home of Albert Pujols.

And the fewer bums in MLB the better. Everyone should come to the Bronx for a nice cut & shave.

9 for $324

That is a disgusting amount of money. As a fan I'm more concerned about the years. I better learn to love this guy, because he's gonna be around for a lonnnng time.

He will make more in average yearly pay than his entire career earnings to date.

Didn't know about NYY being Cole's favorite team but I didn't now they were super high on him, drafted and him and tried to trade for him as well.

Boras Closing in on a billion dollar offseason.

moustakaas, Strasburg, Cole = 633. Boras said teams are in the ball park for Rendon which to me means Machado/Arenado territory 275ish. so 908. And still has Ryu, Kuechel and Castellanos which probably pushed him over a billion.

Talk about overpaying. I mean Cole is good, but there's no way he's going to be worth that kind of investment.

I just hate that a team will do what everyone knows is an overpay, and then agents moving forward will say "Well, Cole reset the market. This is the new standard that I want now." No, just because someone was overvalued doesn't mean that we need to start overvaluing everyone now.

It's bad for the league because only a handful of teams can afford to legitimately overpay someone to this extent. The Yankees can do it and still survive. But then there are teams that can't but will dump everything into one guy and then not be able to build anything around him because they had to overpay to even have a shot at him in the first place.

I think its insane to sign a pitcher to a 9 year contract like that. That is just insane. It makes no sense.

A near 30 year old at that. In a beyond hitter friendly ballpark.

Guess it's worth it if they win a WS or two here soon. If not it will be a waste. A big one.

T1000

Astros stadium is a hitter friendly ballpark too. One WAR is worth like $8.5 mil so technically based on last year the Yankees got a steal. If he continues to pitch like he has the last two years for 4-5 years the contract will be worth it. And there’s a high probability he’ll do just that

Pretty darn good consolation prize after missing out on Cole.

If they can get a Bumgarner or Ryu type pitcher now, they'll be in even better shape than if they'd dumped all the money into 1 guy.

Yeah, they desperately need starting pitching help unless they plan on scoring like 7 runs every night.
Ryu is first choice but they are talking to Cleveland about trading for Kluber as well.

Also, I haven’t heard any change in plans to allow Ohtani to begin pitching again. The initial plan was for him to be available on the mound starting next season.

Barring injuries, the Yankees rotation in 2020 looks formidable but heavily right handed in a not-so-friendly for RHP home park.

Opening Day roster will be:

Cole (R)
Severino (R)
Paxton (L)
Tanaka (R)

The fifth starter may be a lefty if they hold on to Happ OR if Jordan Montgomery continues to impress in his rehab from TJ surgery.

Once MLB determines the extent of German’s domestic violence charges, the RHP should be available sometime in 2020.

The Yankees lineup will still bash even with Didi leaving. The catching/infield with Sanchez, Voit, LeMahieu, Torres and Urshela/Andujar is potent. The OF, if Stanton can stay healthy, will be solid with Judge and Gardner plus a platoon of Tauchman and Frazier to cover the loss to another TJ surgery for Aaron Hicks.

They have to be favorites to win the AL in 2020.

I think they're easily the WS favorites. That's worth less than nothing in December, but I think it's the case.

The defending Champs just lost a huge piece in Rendon. The defending AL Champs lost their ace and are rumored to finally move one of their core pieces (I think Correa I heard), and will see what kind of penalties they face for Trashgate. The Red Sox might be moving Mookie.

If the Dodgers actually add Madbum to replace Ryu, then they're right back in as major contenders. But I'd still give the Yanks an edge.

MadBum stays in the NL West but it’s Arizona for 5 years and $85million. Lots of dirt bike trails there.

Kluber is indeed traded by Cleveland but it is not to the Angels but their division opponent Texas.

CLE being super cheap trading Kluber. The guy had a fluke injury last year and while not top 5 cy young material is easily worth the 18 mill he is due the next 2 year. The second year of that is dependent on him reaching an innings limit at that.

But the bullpen arm they got in return Clase is unproven from a number standpoint but throws the most out of place pitch in league. He has the velocity of all the top end bullpen arms 100+ MPH but his ball doesn't move like all those guys. most 4 seamers have a bit of rise and move naturally to the arm side, but Clase throws 4 seamers that move like a cutter and move away from the arm side (towards lefties as a right handed thrower). Plenty of guys throw cut fastballs but Clase's is almost 7 MPH faster on average. Its that pitch that batier the cheap skate Indians into trading Kluber. They also seem to love light hitting fast outfielders and Deshields fits that mold.

For the Rangers this trade was an easy one. They had 2 top end starters and 3 absolute bumbs. If Lynn and minor are close to what they were last year and Kluber is close to what he was they are pretty decent. Three good pitchers makes the bullpen that much more effective.

dont forget Texas is moving into a new indoor stadium that’s more pitcher friendly. Texas right now is my sleeper pick to win a division

Oh, yeah new ball park for them, hard to believe they are replacing that one already gotta let people sit in the AC and watch baseball I guess.

The other owners have to be jealous of them getting a new stadium ever 25 years through. The Orioles moved into Camden about the same time, I'm sure it wont be long before that one is outdated and the owner threatens to move the team if he cant get a new stadium, with naming rights this time. Maryland Stadium Authority wont allow them to change the name it has to be "Oriole Park at Camden yards" but right across the parking lot they built the Ravens crap stadium and allowed them to sell the rights. It was originally PSI Net Stadium and has been a few other things. I think its a bank now. I generally think naming stadiums is stupid and just a simple way for the team to get money for free, but I do think the O's have a gripe. The Ravens owner basically gets millions to put a name on a stadium the team didn't even build, why cant they?

As far as the Rangers being a sleeper its possible. they were not as bad as their record, pitching should overall be better and HOU cant win 107 games again. But OAK is till in the mix and LAA will also be better. Tough division to win.

Astros whacked hard for the sign stealing...GM Luhnow and manager Hinch suspended for the 2020 season; a $5million fine and loss of their top 2 picks in the next two drafts.

In addition, the investigation implicated then Astros bench coach and current Red Sox manager Alex Cora, leading to deeper investigation of possible sign stealing by Boston beginning in Cora’s WS-winning first year as the Bosox leader. Rumors are his suspension will be as harsh as the Hinch ban.
