Murray will have to shorten the points and go for his shorts in order to alleviate putting more wear and tear on his body, his grinding style has taken it's toll.
The only two players who successfully transitioned late in their careers to serve and volley and attack the net were Connors and Wilander. And by the time Mats did it in the 1988 USO final, he was almost through with tennis. Jimbo really is the only guy to ever do it successfully and Connors was by far the greater player than Murray.

I've been away from the board for a little while during the holidays and what a sad turn of events to come back to....

Watching Murray in that press conference was so emotional, I can only imagine how his lifelong fans felt.

I can't add much that is new in praise of this man, but will say this - we on this board and the tennis fandom in general take rivalries too seriously - always measuring and comparing achievements; seeing the respect and heartfelt accolades from his peers, it should tell us that when these guys compete at the highest levels on the biggest stages, they get bonded together in a way that will never separate them. 50 years on they can look back and still feel the closeness of their encounters when they offered each other their rawest, most intimate sporting self on court and whether they came out winning or losing, only they can appreciate what they had to give - and that is a respect none of us comparing dead numbers on a sheet of paper can ever understand.

So if he holds off for 5 months and then plays his token match at Wimbledon to say farewell then have the surgery then he can retire or have it now presumably with the Dr he did the op from last year as he is in Melbourne. He’d then definitely miss Wimbledon.

So the question is can Andy stand the pain in his hip for another 5 months? If so then hold off surgery and play one last time at Wimbledon; if not then have the surgery now and confirm your retirement. Personally, if I was him I would just have the surgery now- why wait? Nothing to prove any more. He doesn’t have to play at Wimbledon to say goodbye. But I suspect he will probably hold off so he can get to play one final time on centre court.

Andy’s got to see how far he can get with his new hip. He might not be able to get to where he was back in 2016, but I think this is the mental process to start playing singles and satisfy in his own mind where he can get to. He’s still only at the beginning of that process, so any losses right now are not relevant. As long as he is pain free and enjoying it and can see himself improving.

However, I suspect that Andy being the absolute competitive animal that he is will leave no stone unturned until he reaches the absolute max his hip and any subsequent injuries arise allow him to reach. If it is not good enough to win Majors, masters 1000s or 500/250 events then I see him finally walking away from the game with his head up high.
