My Favorite Poly Hybrid

First, I'm a 4.0-4.5 rated mostly singles player, playing mostly from the baseline. Good serves and hard hitting groundstrokes, weak volley game (although not for a lack of trying... :))

I apologize for the long windedness of this post, but I wanted others to get an understanding of my experiences.

I've tried different polys including ALU, Hurricane, PolyMono, Kirschbaum TT and Competition, Polylon, etc..., but my favorite set-up is using Unique Poly Big Hitter 17 mains with Laserfibre Classic Synthetic Gut 17.

It feels so awesome, almost as nice as a full Babolat VS Gut job and much much cheaper. Holds tension well, very powerful and tons more spin than any 17 gauge set-up I've used. This hybrid feels soft and easy on the arm but still crisp, cups the ball, and the sound of the ball coming off the stringbed is unbelievable until you try it.

The key to this hybrid being so good, surprisingly isn't the poly mains(although they do play a part in the equation), it's the LF crosses. The polys just have to be a softer feeling poly with good tension holding characteristics.

Why Unique PBH? Because it is one of the best polys out there for the money. Very similar to Luxilon ALU, but just a little bit softer and more damped than ALU. Maybe a touch more feel. Hurricane is a little soft for this hybrid, but definitely not SPRINGY like Kirschbaum's TT, although Competition is a very nice poly. PolyMono is much stiffer and a little less power while Polylon loses tension way too fast. My preference for poly mains are: 1. Unique PBH 2. Competition 3. Hurricane. I haven't tried the Kryptonite/Poly Plasma yet...

The hybrids I've tried with polys in the mains and crosses include NG, some multis, and syn guts.

NG definitely plays really nice in this type of hybrid, but the price is high for string breakers and some may say not worthy to spend for a cross.

The best hybrid w/ a multi I've tried is with Yonex's 850 Pro Spin - very crisp but soft feeling, decent power, not as much spin because of the larger gauge but will be more durable. This is a very good hybrid, a little more expensive than the LF crosses though. Many other multis lose tension fast or get sawed through by the poly mains.

As for syn guts, Gosen OG Micro 17 feels pretty good very much like the Prince w/ Duraflex but the power level is a little less. Everything else is on par between these two in terms of tension holding, spin, and durability. The LF hybrid has a lot more power and spin than these other two. On my set-up, I string this hybrid about 8% higher tension than normal (65 lbs.) with the crosses 3 lbs. more than the mains. Don't worry, even at higher tensions, it'll still be easy on the arm.

Unfortunately, TW doesn't carry this LF Classic Syn Gut for this hybrid, so you'll have to look around to find it. It retails for less than $5/set.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts,
Paul
