yes the aussie open is big and only three months away but for nadal the tennis masters cup is even bigger...
No, it isn't since the ATP Finals/Masters Cup is not as relevant as Grand Slams. The number of Grand Slams is the most relevant all-time great criterion. Other criteria such as Masters Cup or Masters 1000 are just tie-breakers in case two players are tied in Grand Slams. Nadal would choose another AO over his first MC any day. Federer and Djokovic would also choose another AO over their first Olympic Gold in singles.

Wilander has 7 Grand Slams and no Masters Cup, while Murray has 3 Grand Slams and the ATP finals/Masters Cup. Yet, most people rank Wilander over Murray:

https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/ind...-murray-revisiting-the-classic-debate.624169/

It proves that people rank higher the Grand Slam count than having the Masters Cup.

Sport

G.O.A.T.
Laver did not win ATP Finals/Tennis Masters Cup, at least not in singles.
Nadal's failure on TMC visibly shows that in tennis universality he lags behind his rivals Federer and Djokovic.
Nope. If by "tennis universality" you mean capacity to win all the important titles, Nadal's lack of ATP finals is compensated by Federer and Djokovic's lack of Olympic Gold in singles.

If by "tennis universality" you mean that Federer or Djokovic are more complete than Nadal, then you are wrong again.

Djokovic and Federer are more versatile than Nadal only on indoor conditions, because of their better results on the ATP finals and indoor hard court in general.

But Nadal is the most complete player ever in outdoor conditions. As of now, Nadal is the member of the Big 3 with his Grand Slams more evenly distributed by surface. Nadal has won at least 2 Grand Slams on each surface (hard, grass and clay). Federer and Djokovic only have 1 Grand Slam on clay. 2 Grand Slams on each surface >>>>> 1 Grand Slam on each surface.

So Nadal is more complete than Federer and Djokovic in outdoor conditions, while Federer and Djokovic are more complete than Nadal on indoor conditions. To be more complete than Nadal, Federer and Djokovic should be more complete than him both in outdoor and indoor conditions, not only indoor conditions. In other words, they need to win more Roland Garros titles.

@Sport There are a gazillion threads in the main forum arguing over goatness. Please let's keep it out of our Nadal News thread or the trolls will descend on us to continue the argument. We have some good news about Rafa finally playing - finally finally finally - it seems like forever since we've had the joy of seeing him - so let's concentrate on that. :)

I'm trying not to get too excited about seeing Rafa play again. It's been dire without him. I hope he is fit and ready.
Dont think he will be as fit as he would be if he just started again in AO, but hopefully he will be fit enough to get through two HC tournaments

Tennis definitely needs Nadal. It's just not captivating right now.

I took advantage of the sale on TW and bought the orange shirt from Monte Carlo/Barcelona/Madrid/Rome and the 'lagoon pulse' from Roland Garros. I guess some new Rafa gear will make the Australian Open come sooner.:)

Looks like rafa wants to hold onto the #1 a little longer. Im sure if hes healthy he should easily gain points from Paris last year, along with the WTF.
Just depends if Djokovic wins them both or has a blip somewhere. I really cant see Rafa beating the Djoker at either of these tournaments. Id love to see it though!

What would you guys rather have?
Rafa doing better than Djokovic till the end of the year and retaining the YE#1 ,
OR Rafa losing the YE#1 by getting knocked out of both tournaments early, getting more rest, and going on to win the AO in 2019? :p

Emotional Rafa recounts devastation caused by deadly floods
ON OCTOBER 28, 2018 BY RAFAEL NADAL FANSIN ARTICLES, PHOTOS, RAFAEL NADAL
(AP) – His eyes saddened and his voice marked with pain, Rafael Nadal spoke about the devastation caused by the deadly flooding on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
A torrential rainstorm on Oct. 9 caused flash flooding that left a trail of piled vehicles and damaged infrastructure from surges of water and mud, and killed 13 people. A vehicle carrying a 5-year-old boy and his mother was dragged away by a river of water and mud, claiming both of their lives.
Rafa, who is from Mallorca, knew some of the victims.

“The mother and the son, I know them. They are cousins of one of my best friends. So I lived the situation from very inside and I really saw the drama of all these people looking for the kid,” Rafa said Sunday in Paris, his words measured and his voice tinged with grief. “That’s part of this life and is a very unlucky situation that is almost impossible to recover from.”

Some parts of the island received up to 23 centimetres (nine inches) of rainfall in around four hours, more than one-third of the area’s average annual amount.

“The disaster has been just like 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) away from where I live. I was at home and the rain never stopped,” Rafa said. “It was terrible all the things that happened in the village next to my house, and not only one, a few villages — but especially Sant Llorenc.”

A strong current of water and mud buried cars and pulled up trees on its way through the streets of the town of 8,000. Swamped streets and piles of overturned cars, some of them along the guardrails of a major road, were a common sight in Sant Llorenc. There were also victims in Arta, a nearby town, and in the coastal village of S’illot.

Rafa described the huge sense of loss felt within the close-knit community.

“If you were not there, you can’t imagine how the things were inside that village. I have a lot of family there in the village,” Rafa said. “The family from my mother, my grandmother, sisters and all the family from that side are from there. So I have a big connection with all of them.”

Rafa helped residents to clear mud from their houses in Sant Llorenc and his tennis academy on the island offered shelter to people affected by the floods. He wants to continue offering his support. Rafa, who is making his comeback from a knee injury to play at the Paris Masters, said an exhibition event will be held in Mallorca in December to help the people of Sant Llorenc.

“In some way, the only thing that we can do is just try to support them in terms of try to help them to recover all the things that they lost. (For) human losses, there’s nothing to do,” Rafa said. “We are trying to create something to (raise) some money for the people that lost everything in terms of material values because people who lost life (there) is nothing to do. Things are so sad.”

¤¤ RAFA: IT’S GOOD TO BE BACK IN PARIS!

Rafa Nadal says he’s feeling better daily as he prepares to defend his worldNo.1 spot at the Rolex Paris Masters
Rafa Nadal says the special feeling that being in the French capital always instills in him is spurring him on as he prepares to defend his world No.1 ranking in the Rolex Paris Masters event in Bercy this week.
The great Spaniard, addressing the world’s press at the AccorHotels Arena on Sunday, explained how he was slowly and surely recovering from the knee trouble that has kept him out of competitive action for nearly two months.
And the 11-time Roland-Garros champion declared his delight at being back in the city where he has enjoyed so much glory in his magnificent career.
“I just go day by day. I am happy to be here. I am having better feelings on court. I am practising a little bit more every day. And, yeah, trying to improve the positive feelings. That's all what I can say today,” Nadal said.

"Just happy to be on court again"
“This city so special for me. So that's little bit more motivation to be here.
“So, I’m just happy to be on court again and just happy to be practising with the guys here on tour. And I’m just looking for the next practice. That's all that I can say today.” ...
After another intense practice session, Nadal revealed how he had been rehabilitating in familiar fashion since having to retire in the US Open semi-final in September.

Day by day
“I slowed down a little bit the intensity of practice of course. I stopped for a while after the US Open so then I started to practise slowly, step by step. And that's it. Here I am. Happy to be here.
“It’s nothing new for me. It’s something that happened in my career a couple of times. So more or less, we know the process and we know the things that work good and don’t work for us. And we try to do our way with calm and being staying positive every day.
“Knowing that the things are not changing very quick in this type of injuries. And that's it. We know that. We take care about all the feelings. And we go day by day.”
“I am not thinking about big improvements or big things. I am just thinking about small improvements, and that's the goal.” ¤¤

It's the Australian Open and it's not even close. If he's good enough to win the AO then he's very likely to win one of the Sunshine Masters and dominate clay once more, thus leading to a YE#1 in 2019. The only event that could really cause me not to take the AO in a hypothetical is Wimbledon, but even then it's basically a coinflip.

I WANT RAFA TO END THE YEAR #1. This is non-negotiable. 2019 can wait.

I said it before and will say it again, if he can hold off a rampaging Djokovic from the year end number one, then Nadal absolutely deserves it, because that will be a feat in itself considering the momentum Novak currently has.

Tbh even without the momentum, it’s Djokovics favourite part of the season. It’ll be hard to stop even an average form Djokovic at this point.

Hence if Nadal can outperform then he deserves to end year as number one.

I have always been of the mentality that tennis is more than 8 weeks, if Nadal holds Djokovic off, he deserves it. And if someone brings in the slam thing, well, you will hardly get a player in this era ending year number one without at least one slam win to his name.
