net clearance

just saw an interesting stat while watching soderling vs berdych, the average height above the net, or net clearance of a shot.

Berdych - 67cm (i might have messed up b/w this with soderlings but they are so close so no matter)
soderling - 65cm
Nadal - 81cm

Those 3 were the only ones the commentators but its interesting to see how much spin nadal plays with and how flat those two are. I wonder wats the average in the top 100.

I bet Fed's avg net clearance is in the single digits.

Can't tell if you are being serious, but thats true on his slices at least. Some of the points on youtube show him getting the ball up pretty high. He uses a lot of spin even though it may not look like it.

60 cm above the net is hardly flat, considering how they are whacking the ball. It would go to the wall if it had no spin.

60 cm is relatively flat, i play tennis and the average shot goes above 60 for sure, i mean no1 consistently whacks flat balls 30 cm above the net, thats just asking for an error.

Wait 60cm for Sod/Berd? That's a lot isn't it...? Two feet!! I thought they hit much flatter than that...

... imagine a tennis court, and a net and a ball flying one feet above the net everytime... its ridiculous. 2 feet is very flat.

Do you hit your rally shots at 70 mph? That's about what they were hitting today.

2 feet is not that high given that they are probably much taller than most of us, and they hit a bit of spin as well.

Seriously, I play tennis too... I always imagined myself as hitting with decent net clearance, and I clear the net by about 2 feet too...

Maybe I'm just deluded :p.

Now way it was 81 cm for Rafa. More like 81 in! At Miami last year, they said he was hitting the ball I think 2.5 meters or so above the net.

lol iuno but when i play i definitely clear it by more than 2 on average, once in a while ill get in a good hard flat shot lower than 2, but like i said on average its much higher, this includes all lobs and defensive on the run forehands etc. also its hard to judge the height of the ball as it goes over the net from how far we are standing..

Yeah I suppose I'm just crap at judging it. I always thought a foot above the net was pretty good already. Very obviously, my concept of a foot is not particularly accurate... :p

A foot above the net...thats crazy, you don't do it unless for passing shot and slice.

3 to 6 feet above the net is good for a neutral rally. Thats why we need spin. Even good ping pong players clear the net by a much larger margin than we would think.

And one other thing that always makes us want to hit sooooo close to the net is that because the net is a net, it can be seen through. If it wasn't, if it was made with a solid piece of board or something, I gaurantee you'll want to hit the ball so much higher above the net.

That would be awesome. If you ever "net" a ball then it rebound straight back for you to pick. No need to run to the net to get all the balls.

I retract this statement. It was 1.7 meters above the net.
