New Racquets, What strings to try?

Got two new racquets this week: BLX Juice Pro & K 6.1 Tour 90.

I used to use a BLX Pro Open, with which I was experimenting string patterns , but the racquet lost its playability and is currently sent back to Wilson for a possible warranty replacement.

Here's the string patterns I had tried with my Pro Open in order of when I got them and how I rate them.

1. Pure NXT (63 lbs.)- 8.5/10, really liked it, good feel and playability.
2. Luxilon Adrenaline / Babolat Addiction (58 / 63 lbs.) - 6.5/10, good power, but not much feel, kind of stiff so I didn't like it as much. Also, it felt dead after 2 weeks of playing. (Approx. 16 hours of play)
3. Luxilon ALU Rough (58 lbs)- 9/10, really liked it, didn't get the feel like the NXT but I played amazing with it. About 2-3 weeks after, it started to fail me though (This may have been when my racket started to go, or just that Poly loses tension that fast).
4. Babolat VS Touch / Luxilon ALU Rough (63 / 58 lbs.)- 2.5/10, I had high hopes for this setup but I actually hated it! I had no feel, and all my shots just dumped into the net. (This could be due to the racket, and not the strings, so I am not sure I really got the right feel from it.)
4a. (Secondary racket)- I have a Babolat Aero Pro as a backup strung with Hurricane Pro Tour @ 58, and I like that as well. 8/10 or so.

As for my play style, I am a 25 year old 4.5-5.0 level player and the head tennis coach at the High School level, but I hit hard and flat in a more classic attacking style (one-handed backhand as well), not a heavy top spin oriented player like most of the current generation. For this reason, I figured I would like natural gut most and was utterly disappointed with what happened on my last string setup before I sent my Pro Open back to Wilson.

So, my main question is what people would recommend while keeping in mind everything above. My play style would seem to favor Natural Gut, but the only experience ($50 string job, too) ended up negative. On the other hand, the ALU Rough, which I thought wouldn't fit my game style at all, I absolutely loved!

For those of you who have played with natural gut, does the string have no power, and maybe the ALU rough on the crosses killed my feel, so I got the worst of both worlds? Or was it surely the racket..? Should I go out and try a complete Natural Gut string job? If I loved NXT, shouldn't I also like the VS touch?

I plan to use the Juice Pro as my main racket, and I am thinking of either doing a Gut/Poly Hybrid, or Pure ALU rough. As for the K 6.1 Tour 90, I plan to either do NXT, or a Gut/Poly Hybrid, or maybe even pure Gut since it's a feel racket. If I do Gut, I'm going to do VS Team, since that's the most highly reviewed Gut string I've seen so far.

I am open to suggestions and trying new things, since I'm still experimenting with all this. Suggestions?

Thanks!

Go back to NXT. You are familiar with that string and it is a good reference.
You'll have a better idea of where to go from there.

I didn't like the Pro Open with spin strings that I've tried, RPM (not in depth), B5E, BHBR. I liked it more with more traditional poly's, I've used CF (My String when the season is on), SPPP, Black/Red code (their hella expensive so i quit using them) and a full bed of VS 1.30 but VS works with everything so... (10% Prestretch, 62 Lb.)

Maybe the BT7 thing that everyone hates is the problem with your VS hybrid. Lucky I still have old VS =D.

Just wondering how does a racquet just lose its playability

Well, out of nowhere, I just started to lose control on a good % of shots. I assumed it was the strings initially (after only 2 weeks), but after a restring, I had the same problem again. So I went and talked to my tennis shop guy and he said the racket might just be dead with possible micro-fractures inside that we can't see. The thing is, for about 9 months I have been playing 8 hours or so every week, so it's gone through a lot of wear & tear. Also, since I attack the net quite a bit, I have scraped the head and it has hit the floor many times on recoil or on a low dipping ball. One day, I just noticed that I was playing horribly, with a random dead feeling and the ball dumping into the net far more often than normal. This continued for about 3 weeks and through 2 string jobs, so I assume now after talking to some people that it was the racket. When I stopped using the Pro Open and used my backup Aero Pro, everything was fine. Of course, I will never use a Babolat as my main racket. (The Aero Pro was a gift for my friend, and I just keep it in my bag since he usually only plays with me)

Not a bad idea, considering I've used NXT for years and just started experimenting with Poly a few months ago. (I never thought I'd make the switch to Poly, but it really does play amazingly well.) From what I've heard though, the Juice Pro plays a lot better with some kind of Poly on there.

I've tried gut before. It's great but not worth the price and being prone to weather, IMO. NXT is about as close to gut as anything I've played with recently. It's my favorite string for playability and feel, but it doesn't last very long, so I use Prince Premier Attack. It's a little livelier than NXT, you sacrifice a bit of feel, but it will last at least twice as long.

Durability is not an issue for me. I get my strings redone about every 3 weeks anyways. As soon as the tension drops, I can feel it and it bothers me. Since I'm a flat hitter, I don't have a whole lot of margin for error on my shots, so a decrease in the tension affects me more than the modern heavy spin players.

Poly doesn't really last 3 weeks, for me at least. Especially Lux. Lux is good for the first 8 hours tops, then performance goes totally downhill.

Go back to NXT, it's a great string! :)

Thanks Fuji-Sama. I need maximum control to use Higuma Otoshi!

Ah, I see now with the Poly. It's so odd because I have a friend who's a 5.5, and he uses an Aero Pro with Hurricane Tour. He restrings every 3 months or so!

NXT is better than VS Team ? =O

I highly doubt that, one of those two things must be wrong. Either he's not a 5.5 or he restrings more often than that, unless he plays about once a month.

You're most welcome Sephiroth-San!

In my totally honest opinion, I don't care for full beds of gut, so yes I like NXT better then VS. NXT is more resistant to weather, a little bit less powerful, and a little stiffer feeling. All things I enjoy! :)

What is wrong with full gut? It doesn't play better than NXT?

Racquets do 'go dead' just like strings. The bonds in the graphite filaments or their chemical binders weaken and deteriorate with age and play, and, just like poly, they can either increase or decrease in flex and shock transmission. Grips, too.

I think it's because the Pro Open is soft enough to go full poly. Go for some poly's like ALU Rough that might last longer since Lux usually only last 2 weeks max.

I really want to try out the VS Team / ALU Rough hybrid though. Anyone have experience with this pattern? (Maybe I will start with NXT, and then try out different things after?)

I thought people like Wilson Gut more now. Idk. Only used a non Bt7 Bab gut and it was meh, didn't care for it though although i love how it doesnt lose playability.

So, I ended up doing:

Luxilon ALU Rough @ 58 lbs on my BLX Juice Pro. (Felt amazing on the court, hope it feels this good for 2 weeks)

Wilson NXT 17 @ 60 lbs on the K-Factor 90 racket. (Haven't really played with it yet)

The Juice Pro is a really solid racket, I'm quite pleased with it. It has such a solid, crisp, stiff feel. It reminds me of the Pro Open when it was strung with ALU rough, except a little heavier and more solid. Similar feel.
