Novak in a sharp decline now.

He gained a bit of weight too. He’s “puffy” by his standards. You can best see it at his calfs during the Nardi match. They don’t show the past anatomical definition they used to have.

This is more like Federer in 2017/18 skipping clay season to peak for Wimbledon. Rattie you know Nole is looking for the biggest prize that is left in his career. He is looking for gold. By god, he will get it.
Oh of course I know. I fully expect him to show up on the clay. He’s going to be pretty rusty though at this rate. He will have played 2 matches in coming up 3 months.

Yeah sadly he has to wake up very fast or would stay gold less.

Is anyone worried that he is in Miami and chose not to play the tournament? It means he didn’t think he had any decent shot to win it and that would indicate injury issues, illness or some serious personal issue. It is not like he overplayed in IW as he lost his 2nd match there. Saw him at IW practicing with an elbow brace and I wonder about that as he didn’t hit his FH in the loss against Nardi with the same pace and authority he did all year long in 2023. He was strangely passive from the baseline and was being bossed around by Nardi on many points to the extent that I didn’t think he would come back to win the 3rd.

Well he clearly isn’t as motivated as he was considering he’s gone to Miami anyway for a beach holiday rather than play tennis
Can't let those hotel rewards points go to waste!

Are you guys forgetting how long the clay season lead-up is to the French Open? So many medium/high level events to use to get back into the rhythm. Between Monte Carlo, Barca, Madrid and Rome, there is more than enough opportunities to get up to speed on clay.

Djokovic has a house in Miami. He wasn't able to visit his own home for 2 years. I guess he stayed there.

Novak 37 years old lots of money and family. He holds the all-time slam record and many other records. Gets old playing tour matches all over the world. First few times new and exciting, later just a job. Having accomplished everything he set out to do, his time to make a choice. Time to put the family first and start a 2nd career. He does not want to be all hobbled up like Nadal.

He's getting back in shape there.
That’s what I am interested in finding out. I don’t recall him being out of shape at IW - he just played poorly in both practice and matches. What was the reason for playing with no pop on his shots? What is he recovering from to get ‘back into shape’?

Lack of fitness. That's part of the reason he played poorly.

Plating tennis alone does little for fitness and he apparently wasn't doing much of even that either.

In Monte-Carlo for sure.

But in Madrid Rome and RG? Who is going to beat him on clay if Nadal isn't at his top level. Sinner never won anything on clay until now. Rune is way too inconsistent. Tsitsipas and Ruud are clay specialists but they're also his favorite pigeons. That only leaves Alcaraz and maybe Zverev.

We'll see what happens. Djokovic sucks in February/March/April since 2016. He plays much better in May on clay. Don't jump to conclusions so fast. Even if he doesn't win anything until RG, he's still going to be one of the top favorites.
But Novak is at the worst level of his whole career, he literally said his AO semi-final is the worst he remembers ever playing.
And he lost 63 63 to De Minaur at the United Cup, and lost to a 20-year-old at Indian Wells.
So a lot of guys in the top 100 can beat Novak at Roland Garros if he continues this form...

His last chance for success in the Major tournaments will be Wimbledon but Paris 2024 will be played a few weeks later and the Serbian player finds himself at a crossroads:
Give it his all in the GS event where there is less competition and it is easier for him to adapt to his current style of play or not to play that GS to the fullest knowing later on that it will be his last chance to win the only major title he has yet to achieve in his great tennis career?

I think I could accept losing the slam race to him if he loses in the 1st round of the Olympics again. Omg that would be sweet.

His last charge for success in a major?

Things can go quickly at his age if the body stops holding up, as we saw with Fed, but we haven't really seen a clear sign of that with Djokovic.

He was in all major finals last year, winning three. If he stays healthy for the next two years, I would still expect him to put himself into positions where he could win major titles. Of course, Sinner and Alcaraz are on the up and may have a say in this, but so far it's not as though they've shown that a) they're clearly better than him, or b) that they'll always be waiting for him at the business end of every tournament.

I say this not being a fan of the guy...
