one handers, what do you do if the ball drops shot to your backhand?

assume that a shot lands near the service line on you backhand side. do you slice it or hit a offencive topspin stroke? do you approach or stay at the baseline? do you hit to their forehand or back hand? i'm talking about real match situation in a tournament. and since i'm a one hander, one hander's answer would be really helpful. please be as sepcific as possible. thanks alot for taking your time...

Below the net, chip it. Above the net, rip it.

As for where to put it in your opponent's court, depends on your opponent and their court position.

Personally I would either chip and charge or blast it cross-court to their backhand. Be careful if you choose to slice though, its got to be almost perfect or else they'll just rip a winner.

I like to come to net, but once again, just make sure your approach shot is hit well or you could be in for a long day.

If you're playing a baseliner another shot to consider would be a drop shot, but I can't give you any advice on that because I have not fully developed this shot yet.

Thanks, but I can't take credit for it.....I heard it somewhere.

As for going to the backhand, not smart if your opponent is camped out there. By then they've opened up your forehand side and it would be an easy shot for them down the line. Maybe if you get one that you can spin and hit the service T or inside it.

Well, I never said hit it there if your opponent is sitting on that shot, obviously hit to the open court unless they have a terrible backhand or you have a terrible down the line backhand.

I usually rip it. Back in the day(less than a year ago :D), when I was starting out, I used to run over and blast forehands from that side. As the ball is short, you have a little extra time to run around.

If it's below net height, slice deep up the line and follow it in. If it sits up, rip it up the line and follow it in.

I'd just like to add that if ,(like Andre
Agassi for example), your volleys or net play suck for your level, chip it deep and recover position at the baseline before your shot lands.

This should also be done if

1)you are being drawn into the net

2)If your opponent won't have to run for your slice down the line

Ditto. This is exactly what I do. If I reach the ball with enough time to properly set up, I usually whip it with some heavy topspin. I virtually always go down the line, unless my opponent is running full-speed in that direction, in which case I'll go behind him.

BTW, it doesn't matter if you slice it up the line and it goes to their forehand. It's the best shot selection. And if you can get some sidespin on it, that would be even better.

Depending on how fast I got to the ball and how high the ball is, I would either flick the fuzz off the ball crosscourt or drill a flat one right down the line. I could do the opposite, but that's generally what I do most often. The deep topspin crosscourter is the safest shot.

Depending on the situation I have done a variety of shots. I don't have a favorite shot but for sure, anything remotely short and I'm coming into the net.

I would Throw my racket to the ground, run to and past the drop shot'ed ball jump over the net over to my opponent who just hit the drop shot and yell in his face something to the effect of, "HOW DARE YOU DROP SHOT ME! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!!!!!?"

I usually get as low as I can and either roll it up the line or flick it cross court depending on what your opponent does.

Drop shot and be ready for the volley.

Yes, drop shot could be a good response depending on where the other player is and how early you get to the ball (and also the surface) . . . there is quite a famous picture of Nastase doing precisely that to win the USO (against Ashe) but I think that involved a net-roller.

Another option would be a steep angle crosscourt slice but again depends quite a bit one circumstances and surface.

In most cases, the ball is already a few inches below the net, half yard or 0.5m so in front of you whilst you are still moving forwards. What I normally do is to roll the ball up, kind of using the low arm and wrist to flick the ball up, and use some of the forward momentum to push/drive the ball on the line. The push/drive in the follow-through (with body forward momentum) is to make the shot low and flat.

The shot is not very powerful or supper fast, but it is played close to the net and the opponent has less time to react anyway. For me, this is one of the easiest OHBH shot, and if I don't get the winner straight away, I am at the net ready to put away the return.

Too many unanswered questions: is the ball short because you just hit a forcing shot, or is it a suprise? Are you a baseline basher or is approaching the net the goal for you? Do you have a good topspin BH? I assume you have a slice BH available.

two things:

1) do an approach 1hbh shot. (doable) The place where I play at does this drill. You can probably find this drill on the net and practice. Or do and offensive 1hbh slice. another similar drill (much easier) Make sure to do the 1hbh slice correctly meaning it has to skim the ground.

2)do a topspin lob with the back hand into the opposite side of where the person is standing. Make sure that the lob is near the baseline and has topspin. This can be a great tool.

Lastly if you chip go short make sure to have angle on the ball or set yourself up so that you can put away the volley. Its better just to go with 1 or 2.
