Obviously Andy Roddick is the current holder of the fastest recorded serve. I'm wondering who are some other players that have held this title?

Technically, Tim Henman clocked a serve at 587kmh at Roland Garros. Obviously, the gun was broken.

Britain's Mike Sangster hit 154 mph in 1963, but alas, since it wasn't recorded on modern technology, it remained unofficial. One time, Rod Laver retreated so far back to return his serve that he became entangled in the backstop netting.

Also, in 1981, German tennis coach and statistician Horst Goepper claimed a serving speed of 199.53 mph during a test in Weinheim.

Australian Colin Dibley held the official record previous to Rusedski, clocking at 148 mph in a 1974 fast serve competition held at Forest Hills. He beat out Stan Smith, Ashe, and Roscoe Tanner, who came in 2nd at 140 mph.

"The fastest unconfirmed recorded tennis serve of 427 mph belongs to Bradley Vance during a college tennis match."

that tilden article is BS, because it also said this

It's probably impossible to even muster up the racquet-head speed to hit a ball that hard. It would probably break your racquet too---just guessing

check this out man. These geniuses made a potato gun that launches tennis balls at 500 mph.

crazy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGbdu2h-XG8

that is nowhere close to 500mph. take a look at the video: you can see the ball at least twice. I don't not the fps in youtube, but it's not higher than 30 (would make no sense for mpeg4).
seeing the ball in two pictures = distance between the to positions * 30 = m/s.
so I think this is about 60-100m/s MAXIMUM...
