Players Crying After Losing?

Ivan Lendl after his 5-set loss to Boris Becker in the 1989 Wimbledon semi final definitely had tears of sadness and devastation in his eyes as he packed his bag and shook his head. Lendl had led 2-1 in sets and 3-2 (with a break) in the fourth set.
Wow, you know it's a devastating, career-altering loss when even a cold machine like Lendl is moved to tears.

Lendl then announced that he was skipping the entire 1990 clay-court season to focus on grass. A few months later, i.e. after the 1989 US Open was over, he got a grass court laid at his Greenwich, Connecticut home, replacing the Flushing Meadows Decoturf replica court that he had at his home for years before.

I would rather them cry than not care. They pour their heart & soul into this game.
The training they put in & the mental aspects of tennis can be overwhelming.
There're a lot of players that look like they don't care to be on the court at times.
I much prefer a player to play their heart out & cry their heart out if they want.
It shows me how much they care, all the love for these players.

Andy Roddick not crying after the Wimbledon final was,,,, unbelievable

Right, I was thinking the same thing. To be as close as he was to achieving everything he sought out in his career, And just falling short to the guy he just couldn’t get past in big matches.

Win US open

Wimbledon

To go as long as the match did too, he always speaks with a lot of respect in punditry and analysis of his career and experience.

There are people far worse off in the world than him. That's probably how he looks at it.

Mehh, he looks disgusted (and I think he's trying to make sure the umpire knows it, since he's partly blaming the calls/overrules in the fourth set), but I wouldn't say he was on the verge of tears.

no doubt Jana Novotna started the crying revolution if i am not wrong

She's certainly the most famous modern example in my eyes, but I've heard stories of older players breaking down afterwards in a big way. I think it helped that (a) we don't have as much TV coverage from back then, and (b) with fewer occasions where the media would immediately intrude on the court, the players could retreat to the locker room before they cracked.

For example, after losing to Drobny in the 1951 French QF (from two sets up and 4-1 in the third), Dick Savitt was reportedly such a mess that his fellow players had to carry him into the showers. In fact, rereading Drobny's autobiography, he describes what almost sounds like a mental breakdown by Savitt after he lost the fourth set:

"At 7-6 in my favour Savitt missed a sitter at the net. That made it two sets each and I was just thinking that I should now win when Savitt let out a shriek, staggered to the umpire's chair, sat down, buried his face in his big hands and cried like a baby. His great frame shook as he covered his face with a towel to wipe away the tears and sweat.

It was a moment of great emotion with the whole stadium silent and staring at Savitt. He had broken down completely and even I, after five previous matches against him, had never realised how highly strung he was.

I stood there on the court helpless, not knowing what to do but feeling very sorry for him. When, with tears still streaming down his face, Savitt suddenly got up and walked back to court like a man going to his execution, I was in half a mind to give him a match he almost deserved to win."

I know that Charlie Pasarell also broke down after his historic loss to Gonzales at Wimbledon in '69.

Graf wiped a tear off after losing in the 1990 RG final.

The most 'epic' I have ever seen was W 13. Lisicki couldn't wait till the deed was done. She started weeping profusely mid-match!

I don't remember if Djokovic cried AFTER losing USO 21 final but he did cry during the match. Though it was purportedly due to disbelief that the USO crowd was on his side for a change.

How come? Mental giant Djokovic crying? Who would have thought?
Emotional crying is a normal and healthy response of the nervous system to strong emotions. It helps release stress. Unless you think that mental giants are people who don't experience emotions, why woupd it be surprising that they cry?

I think Rafa cried after losing that AO final to Wawrinka. He had tears in his eyes during his speech. Also remember Fed crying just for a moment after W14 or W15. They didn’t even show it on the original broadcast but some other camera caught it.

Why is Berrettini smirking like that? Lol

Berretini is unable to resonate with Federer and he is finding it amusing that people with 20 slams are crying while he is unable to win even 1. Must be thinking like " Selfish men have won so much and they still want to continue without allowing us to win..."

That was sure a tough moment for Roger.

No matter which player you supported during that match, you had to feel for him.

Yes, we felt embarrassed for sure. Both fanbases of Fedal were equally embarassed and disgusted when he cried uncontrollably, sports at that level has no room for pity. Fed crying at AO, Novak crying at olympics are all embarassing moments, this is why Nadal has more control over his emotions, he cried in locker room after the wimbledon 07 final, he held it together, that is what champions are supposed to do. At that stage you need to have some respect for the opponent, it should come from within, you can contemplate what happened after on court thing, but on court you should hold it together - respect for opponent was lacking in Federer, but he learned it in 2010s after getting beaten again and again and again, his 2 young rivals taught him that he is no better than him, so he needs to stop crying so much.

Yes very true.

You would think he would’ve shown better sportsmanship but it goes to show you just how strong those emotions were at the time. It may have been building for sometime, as he was more than likely feeling the pressure of a young gun coming for him.

I think many people have remembered this due to the players involved. A very tense, emotional time not only for Roger but for Rafa too.

Yeah, he was always a loser to Nadal in H2H right from 2004 till now, this was a young champ on his tail and he knew this, so these emotions were bottling up, then from 2008FO to 2009AO he lost in slams on all 3 surfaces to Nadal, I guess he finally knew he time on the top was over, so he was crying, it was his ego which burst I think so.

Not a pleasant scenario but he proved all too human.

You’re spot on with your post.

How about crying during a match? Djokovic losing to Med in the USO final is a famous example. He was crying during the fifth set. Sampras also cried during a match at the AO against Courier because of Gullickson's death. Cilic at Wimbledon, etc.

And Agassi did not cry after the 1995 USO loss to Pete. I have that match on VHS and watched it again recently, including the trophy ceremony. He was not crying.
