Punch Volley help...

i did run a search for vollies and didnt find what i need. Okay, I can get low, get wide, for tough vollies, i can do slice vollies and half volley with some success, but i cant do the easiest punch volley. the very beginner shot, racquet in front and step in and punch. im kinda getting the hang with the forehand but my coach still tells me i back swing too much. backhand is a mess, everyshot im dropping my racquet head and back swinging because im so used to put backspin on all my shots. and on fast shots, my slice volley fails miserably. i just cant seem to let my racquet head stay in front and just block it, its frustrating. it should be a much easier shot than slice vollies, any help? its like learning top spin before learning stepping in and drive through the ball. or kick serve before a normal flat serve. its redicules, and thats how all my tennis experiences has been, always learn the tougher shot before the basic fundamental shot.

Navratilova reports this exercise received from Roche, which I found effective:

- practice your punch volleys and stop your rackethead movement after say several inches of contact, instead of a long followthrough

your arm should become stronger, your action crisper

Keep your elbows in front of you and volley mainly from your legs (moving into the ball), well flexed at the knees.

that is exactly what i cant do. im so used to making a lil cut under the ball for the spin, im not used to just plain punching.

Force yourself to. Just push straight through the ball. Forward. With a continental or even Eastern grip (which some players' volley grips tend to learn towards), you're still getting some underspin.

There's no other way to explain it then really just trying to move through the ball.

should I maybe set up an hour of lesson with a teaching pro? honestly, i understand my problem but maybe with a pro, he can help me more... if i have to hit 1000 vollies to get it right, thats what im gonna do.

Sure, he can definitely see the motion and any problems you have. Won't hurt at all. :D

Don't forget it's possible to just get a ball machine or friend and hit 1,000 balls, too though.
