Road to 5.0 - Groundstrokes (video)

I think you have a point here, I kind of thought about what you said "confidence" and I can completely relate.

I mean my topspin backhand was erratic and horrible 6 months ago, but now its actually decent, not close to my forehand, but its quite decent, and when im hitting it well im confident and keep at it, tho I do slice from time to time for variety, but whenever I miss 1 topspin backhand, or god forbid 2 in a short amount of time, I completely lose confidence in it, because I know not long ago it was a huge weakness, and my mind goes back then and then I lose complete confidence and then I start slicing alot subconsciously, even tho I know its not the right thing to do.
I need to somehow make a shift in my mind regarding this, its similar for my 2nd serve, im hitting it really well and improved it alot, but as soon as I double fault, I lose confidence in it, and then I get tight everytime I serve my 2nd serve, and sometimes may even resort to hitting 2nd serve 2 times to kind of give miself more margin and to hit 2 or 3 good ones and give miself confidence again and then its again fine...
Confidence is so huge, trusting ur shot..at least in my case.

Its so key to stay loose in practice and matches and really you have to work through that on your own terms. I have just had the realization that it i stop caring about the score and go for my shots that I play my best tennis and since that's the goal for me it's a win win.

It's all about overcoming your ego which is easier said than done. Some days you will lose that battle but you just have to stick with it and you'll develop that confidence in matches no doubt.

I played a match over a month ago against a guy that I was losing too last summer (we played a few times) like 6:2 and so on

Went down 0:5 in the 1st set, then lost the 1st set 3:6 and then won 6:2 and 6:1

It was just like you said now, I started the match tight and nervious, and missed an easy forehand sitter, and then I got even more tight, so many things going on in my head like:

-My forehand is not good, I don't trust it, i just missed an easy ball
-He crushed me last summer but ive made so much progress now, if he crushes me again it means its all in my head and im at the same level

stupid things like that...

Anyway, went down to 0:5 already, and throughout all the 5 games I was super nervious and thinking about all these things, thinking about losing, playing tight, playing nervious... and my strokes were not even my strokes... my forehand that I was hitting was not the forehand im hitting in practice, im griping the racquet 10 times tighter and the technique completely changes, tight bunt of a swing, no lag no looseness..

Then after im 0:5 down something in my head went on, like no way im going to lose 0:6, no way, and I told miself just stop thinking, just relax, stay loose like you know how.. and then my level raised so much that its unbelievable, if you think about it, because its the same player, im the same player, and yet such a difference... once I played freely and loosely I could whip my forehand and get the spin and pace and start hitting shots in and from then on it was different and the more I started hitting the more confident I became and the more freely and better I played.

Some people don't realize but having confidence is sooooo huge, I can't overstate it, at least from my experience so far, when your confident and play freely and loose, you hit with the technique you know how to hit and that you hit when you practice and you play great, but once you start doubting urself, losing confidence in ur shots and thinking about stuff and the score etc.. your technique and shots completely change and break down into something else, and your level drops to the gutter

And yeah, thats why match practice is important for sure, the more you play the more your under these situations the better you learn to cope with them, and once you played 100 matches where ur forehand was on fire, once you miss 1 or 2 odd ones in a match ur not gonna lose confidence in ur shot just like that, because uve been there done that so many times..

And just to add, I don't have any semblance of a consistent two handed topspin backhand. But, because I've played matches I will absolutely know what to do with it once it develops.

You just need to have the discipline to go for your shots in matches even if it means missing them. You can only really develop this confidence by playing a ton of matches.
Agreed. But I will trust my coach’s recommendation over any forum member since he played futures and held an ATP ranking in the 500s. :)

Really? I found slice harder to learn, I mean my topspin backhand is improving at a quite nice pace, but slice.. well I feel more confident with it and I feel like I can get it in almost without fault, but only if I hit it with a big higher net clearance, not really that bitting low skid slice, thats quite hard, I mean I know how to hit it, but its not easy to hit 3 in a row, if I try to hit 5 in a row almost guaranted to net 1 of them..
Your slice pops up. It’s not the kind that will give stronger players any trouble. Your racquet face is too open at contact.

One of the coaches I hit with, was ranked 103 in the 80's, and I believe top 25 in doubles. My other coach made qualies for citi open (and regularly does stents as hitting partner for the US WTA Women - not Serena/Venus). Lol, and BJ King was working out at my club all last month (though I never saw her actually play tennis.. more fitness stuff).,

But still working my way up.. Hard to execute what I am told.

I have been working hard on shot tolerance. Typically averaging about 40 to fifty hits per warm up rally - they require 50 before I can "start lesson" which usually takes me 1-3 balls. I am told that my both my rally ball is heavier and harder than the WTA players, though I am just a 3.5. Constantly being told I have 4.5 ground strokes with 2.0 mental game. A big part of my problem was I grew up as a kid hitting but not playing. Learning to play matches is very different. Finding the right balance and shot selection is the hardest part of tennis.

For me match play is more about:
game plan
recognizing neutral, defensive and when to be aggressive (for both me and my opponent)
adjust game plan
identify opponents weakness/tendencies and adjusting my game to it

On a positive note, I am 6/9 singles 4-0 this season. So some of it must be sinking in.

May I ask how come you watch those? :D Anyhow that's freaky if you found out his coach that way.

I watch gear reviews like racquet reviews... that's quite normal yeah? Then I just happen to watch their other videos for fun, why not its just gear reviews. Have you not seen string, bag, or racquet reviews from TW? His coach looks so similar to her and she in the video has one of the most beautiful OHBH from a girl I've seen. Sorry for going off-topic.

I prefer to read them, as video doesn't usually work in the office.

Did you know that the players in our avatars are friends btw?

@StringSnapper

Im pretty sure im gonna play this week on the court where I can setup my cam from behind, so you can better see my technique.

But meanwhile since I did some shadoe strokes today like I do sometimes when I have a free day, here are slow motions of FH where u can really see the technique and movements and all

Looks good. I think for a hard hit fh we really want the "rock skimming"motion. You seem to have it down
