Roger Federer: 'I'm always in advantage when I can S&V on fast court'

The last edition of the Hopman Cup came in 2019, and Roger Federer was among the players to beat. The Swiss claimed all four singles victories, including a dominant 6-4, 6-2 one over world no. 4 Alexander Zverev in an hour and nine minutes in the final.

Roger took charge in the opening set's closing stages and matched towards the finish line to deliver the first point for his country in their title defense quest at RAC Arena in Perth. Federer lost ten points behind the initial shot and tamed the rival's serve with a block return that proved efficient on both the first and second serve.

Roger covered the court beautifully, mixing up his strokes and outplaying the rival in every department to notch a quick win before the women's singles encounter between Belinda Bencic and Angelique Kerber. The Swiss never faced a break point and converted three out of five return chances, enough to control the scoreboard and cross the finish line in no time.

"It seems to be working out well for me. I'm feeling good, and I'm playing very well; I'm enjoying myself. I think the people here in Perth and Australia know how much this place means to me, so it's a great thrill; I can not thank you enough, guys.

Alexander had a wonderful end of the previous season, beating me and Novak Djokovic back-to-back in the semis and the final at the ATP Finals in London. It was a great effort by him at the event when only the best are remaining; it will set him up nicely for this season, and I'm sure he enjoyed his off-season; it is always a great feeling going on vacation with that title.

Today it was a good match for me, no doubt about it. I think I served well. Conditions are quick, so I think when you string together a nice serve & volley game like I did today, it's always going to be tough for any opponent.

Alexander struggled, but I made the most of it. It's not fair to play so many tall guys, but it is what it is (laugh). Ask Rod Laver about the size of those guys back then. We are eating a lot of vegetables, I guess. We are all growing, but what strikes me at the moment is that you just had a guy at 6'2"; back in the day, that was a serve and volley player.

Nowadays, the big guys are moving incredibly quickly. We saw Tsitsipas this week, and now again with Alexander; they can slide on the court, which was not possible when I came on the Tour. The game has evolved and changed, and I had to adapt my game accordingly.

In the first ten years, I played in a certain way, and in the second decade, I had to play differently because of those big guys, like Novak too; he is almost 6'3" or so, and he moves unbelievably well," Roger Federer said.

They only care about GOAT/slam race, if they cared about 'beloved brand' in Tennis, they wouldn't have slowed down in first place.

you don't think they would do that for the most 'beloved brand" in tennis?

Reality is that if courts never slowed down.

Slams race would be something like

Federer : 30+ Slams
Rafa : 15 Slams ( 13 FOs + 2 very hard earned slams outside clay, possibly in 2010 USO and 2010 Wimbledon)
Novak : 10-12 slams
Roddick, Murray, Tsonga, Berdych types with some slams here and there

Tennis would look in very bad shape with Federer's record possibly never being broken

You're very generous giving Novak and Rafa that many slams in the hypo Fed era...

Novak would take most of those slams after 2017, till 2017 I think he might be on 6 slams, Boris Becker range, hehe

Rafa is the bull, someone with 13 frenchs will take 1-2 outside it as well, he will get the window somewhere...

don’t even think Novak would get to 3 fast court slams tbh. Maybe he could fluke one if Roger got bored.

This is already the era with the most dominant serves ever. Just check the stats.

What Federer fans wanted it to be? Did they want Isner, Raonic and Anderson to win Slams?

And by the way Federer doesn't deal so good with big servers. Djokovic and Nadal have a higher win percentage than him against >6'2 tall opponents.

He mostly relied his success on bullying shorter players like Hewitt, Davydenko and Nalbandian while he got in trouble when bigger players like Big4, Delpo, Tsonga and Berdych arrived.

In the 70s and 80s footwork was more important than big serves. Laver, Rosewall, Borg, McEnroe, Connors were quick and had no big serve.

Djokovic and Nadal are faster than Federer so I see them having an advantage in that era.

Not all hypotheticals favour Federer, sorry.

Tennis have evolved from shorter to taller opponents but at the same time Federer has also aged a lot and physically he was not at his peak from late 00s onwards, so as the tennis world is getting taller, Roger is getting weaker, thus it is not surprising at all.

Like for example : Novak's win in slams vs 6'2+ is 90, Rafa's is 85 and Fed's 81, but if you check these numbers in 2010 then Fed is also at 89% and thats the age at which past greats all retired, so you see the decline in Fed since 2010 is a result of the slow courts and his age.

Serve was always a potent weapon, a better server like Federer or Sampras will always have an edge in those eras.
Plus at his peak Federer had as good a footwork as anyone who played Tennis, so it is not such a big edge for djokodal

Truth is Federer was so good they changed the court speeds to stop him winning nearly everything every year. It was deliberately planned. They watched the 05 06 and 07 french open finals and thought slowing Wimbledon and USO down is the best idea. Nadal and Djokovic only started winning slams on the really slow courts. What they have done to Wimbledon is a joke. The 2008 Wimbledon centre court was medium slow and high bouncing. Very different to every previous Wimbledon. Roger was stitched up badly that year.

Couple of problems with this. First, Big4 includes Federer lol.

Second, he really got in trouble from those other guys?

His H2H against those guys is 60-19. Yeah, he really got exposed...
