Rules on using ball machines on public courts?

On some public courts (California), there are signs not to exceed 6 balls per court. There are also some signs "No Private Lessons" and such. One time, I was hitting around some balls with my two kids and was told not to give lessons. What's the deal with this? Am I allowed to teach my own kids how to play on public courts? This was during a time where we were the only ones playing, as I have enough sense to not bother neighboring courts.

Also, I was using my ball machine to toss balls to my kids and a couple of their friends, (during a mid-day time when no one was playing) and was told by a staff member to not use the ball machine.

What is the deal with using a ball machine on a public court? In California, we have mostly public outdoor courts.

Any experience and helpful opinions would be appreciated.

ummm why didn't you just ask the staff member when they told you no..?

i have heard of this about private clubs and it's more understandable because they make a living on coaching, but public courts..sheesh that's freaking ridiculous, if you're a tax payer then you paid for those courts!

the only thing I can think of about using lots of tennis balls or a ball machine on the public court is that the kids will try to steal your tennis balls.
happens to me all the time.
I have not had (yet) experienced someone asking me not to practice serves with my 75 balls in the hopper  it just would not turn out good :)
but then, I am in Chicago....

Yeah, I should have asked him. The thing is, I've been playing here for a while, and this was the first time. Other workers never brought up the issue, so I figured it might be one of those "gray area" thing, and this one guy was having a bad day or something. I figured I'd lay low for a while. . .
