Hewitt/Mc Millan,Drysdale,Curren Kriek and Ferreira are household names in the tennis community as they all reached major finals. But a lot of good players remain forgotten.Time to bring´em up.
Ray Moore, of course.Once a promising young player, he never delivered. He was a GP/WCT regular but achieved as little as Colin Dowdeswell, an elegant all courter who once played ( and lost ) the Johannesburg Open final.
The 1974 DC team won the title but we must remember that India forfaited the final because of political issues.
I also remember Andy Pattison, from Rhodessia which is now known as Zimbabwe. He beat some good players like Borg and Orantes with a fast S&V game and won a WCT title in 1975 if memory serves well.He was also a SAF Open champion in 1979, when he beat Victor Pecci ( RG finalist that season) in a very surprising way.Not that he didn´t deserve the win. That win was unexpected but Patison had been honouring the pro tour for long time and he was never an easy meal whatsoever.
Then we had a big server called Robert Van´t Hof, who was one of the best as a junior but, like many others, missed the pro scene.
Now here is David Anderson.I hope he does achieve some good results in order to restore the brilliance of pre Mandela´s South African Tennis.
The same pattern followed the ladies.Coetzer,Stevens, doubs specialist Yliana Kloss were well known players but little has been said about Vermaak,Kruger and Rosie Fairbanks, who was the best junior female in 1978 or 1979 but achieved little as a pro player.
