Self rate questions

My wife is joining a 2.5 team for spring and one of the players went through the self rate process. She is new to tennis but played soccer in High School. She answered the questions truthfully and she got a 3.0 rating. Really?

So for my 4.0 team, I'm going to recruit a bunch of ex-college soccer players since it's basically the same.

Doesn't this just encourage lying on these self rate questions?

86golf, why do you see 3.0 rating as problematic in this case? Basically, 2.5 is a tennis novice with no athletic background. A tennis novice + some athletic background = 3.0... makes sense to me.

Unless this woman is 55+ and overweight, she's likely to outgrow 3.0 in no time.

On a side note, soccer happens to be a good pre-cursor to tennis...

Lot's of reasons. First, we have very competitive teams and if this lady get's stuck at 3.0 she probably won't get any playing time and if she does, she will probably lose badly. Not a good experience for a first year player.

Things I'm working on with my wife are: lobs, drop volley, moon balls, cross court returns, serving.
So how are those skills related to soccer?

Better be working on her footwork, which is something you see in soccer from time to time.

She'll be fine at 3.0. I started at 2.5, and I had no athletic background whatever. That's the type of person who should self-rate at 2.5. She's already getting way more help from you than anybody she will face at 2.5.

Besides, had she lied or been allowed to be a 2.5, she would have been DQ'd fast. I think the computer has a hair-trigger to DQ anyone who self-rates at 2.5 unless they really are as bad as I was.
