Severin is out of Holger Rune's team

Good move since he desperately needs to cull his entourage. Bad news is more disruption and drama with his team. Aneke makes a ridiculous excuse since the Rune team hired Sevi to be a part time coach, now they use that as an excuse to dismiss him? Get your stories straight. They knew Luthi wasn't available to be with him all the time (neither is Boris).

Amateur hour.

As reported by the Danish broadcaster TV 2 Sport, Aneke Rune declared that the collaboration between her son and Severin Luthi has already ended: "The timing with Severin wasn't quite right. Holger needs a coach who is always with him, Severin will be able to cover too few weeks for the continuity he needs."

Boris is a wrong coach for Rune, Boris can work with someone who has hunger to win. Boris can take Sinner to new heights and make him win more than 15 slams.
I feel bad for Rune. He’s going to get overpowered and moved around by Sinner. He’s a non factor on outdoor hard court. On grass, I highly doubt he wins Wimbledon. Only Roland Garros he has a “chance” but even there I can’t see him defeating Alcaraz or Zverev or Sinner.

Rune is a happy loser and doesn't have work ethics and hunger of Sinner. Boris can do wonders with Sinner since he has hunger and work ethics of Djokovic.

Didn't Andy Murray said something derogatory about Kenneth Carlsen once? Yeah I found it lol

"Andy Murray, whose jokey remark that he and Kenneth Carlsen had "played like women" in the first set of their first-round match in Auckland was reported in some quarters - largely by people handily placed in offices an entire hemisphere away - as though he had been guilty of rampant misogyny and had caused a near riot in the process."

Rune has quickly gone from a prodigy to a circus. This is reaching Raducanu levels of coaching absurdity. I know this as a former athlete myself, chaos is bad for business. A key for a young player, more than the quality of the coach, is a steady and guiding hand. He needs to be developed into something by someone with a clear long term vision, and given time to actually implement that vision.

I absolutely hate seeing coaching circuses and carousels. It never ends well for young guys.

Mom announcing this is arguably the worst part of the news as well. Shows she still calls the shots. I am beginning to be concerned about Rune.

You think he’s going to achieve anything significant this season?

Me personally - I highly doubt it

He absolutely can is the thing. I think he loves clay and will kick it up a notch. He was points away from a Masters title last year in MC and was able to win over Djokovic in Rome. That guy is still in there somewhere.

I just need to stop seeing all the BS all the excuses all the chaos. He needs to just put his head down and practice and play tennis for 6 months and let the results fall as they may. Not everything is a crisis. Just trust the process.

Who is in charge? Who has the final word on hires for the coaching team? Becker or Aneke?

I fear that if they tie Becker’s hands and make decisions above his head, he will not stick around either. No strong coach (especially the ex-player types) is going to want to coach Rune under those circumstances.

Right now no one cares. He is 20 he needs to improve very fast to be considered among slam contenders. Netflix shows have curse. He is cursed.

World belongs to sinner right now. I only believe in tennis world and not pr world. Rune seems to be someone very hard to work with. Unlike sinner or Carlos

Nope

People hate when the players act so unprofessional. Coaching circus is first sign of huge discipline issues. Maybe this guy is very hard to work with. Maybe his mom is. It doesn't matter.

Yes a snake pit. Don't enter it. I feel sad for people working for him. He has a lot of desire and not enough results. It's very bad for the pack

Is Rune just another Khachanov?
they seem worlds apart to me. temperamentally, kk seems like one of the nicest guys on tour, no trace of attitude.

do you mean with regards to talent? i think rune's ceiling is much higher--KK's game is solid but for his size, he doesn't bring nearly the heat as some smaller players...very straight down the middle game imo. rune's got more flair and variety, assuming he can pull it together.

To compare rune to others the same age.

Zverev and Tsitsipas were more successful already. Going way back, he is better than Andy Murray in slams at the same age. Murray didn't make slam final until he was 21.

Sadly for rune I don't think he is making any final in 2024. The field is stronger than 2023 but weaker than 2008 where you had to go through either Federer or Nadal or Novak to make the final (tsonga Murray made finals beating Nadal in semis). But even in this weak field I don't think rune makes a slam final.

So he is stuck outside top 4 for foreseeable future to me. Andy Murray became top 4 and remained there more or less until 2014. He dropped for few weeks in 2009/10. But that was pretty short run.

Rune is about to have worse start than Andy freaking Murray at slam level. Yes Andy is not a scrub, he won 3 slams. But if rune only wins 3 slams it's a failure of a career for him. He was anointed as part of the next big 3. But right now he is struggling to make his first slam semis.

Holy moly that’s the first time I’ve seen that

LMAO
You gotta check out the new Netflix episode on Holger, it does him no favors. They show his mom making his bed for him, combing his hair and telling him what outfits to wear (no joke). Judy Murray and Gloria Connors traveled with their sons when they were 19-21 also, but they weren't so smothering.

And she calmly puffs away whenever they go out, like here. It's total soap opera:

Mother is the best: Severin Lüthi and tennis talent Holger Rune are separating

The collaboration between the former Federer coach and the Danish top ten player ends surprisingly quickly. Rune's dominant mother may have played a role

In December, Holger Rune and his team surprised the tennis circus with the news that Severin Lüthi was joining the 20-year-old Dane's coaching staff. Immediately before the Swiss Indoors, he had already brought Boris Becker into his team.

Just over a month later, this message is already outdated. Rune and Lüthi agreed on Sunday to end the work with immediate effect. Severin Lüthi told the NZZ on Wednesday: “There’s actually not much to say. We tried it, and both sides saw relatively quickly that it wasn't working as we had imagined. Then it is better to end it immediately than to continue for another three or four months.”

The disappointing outcome of the Australian Open may have contributed to the quick separation. The first Grand Slam tournament of the season ended for Rune in the second round against Frenchman Arthur Cazaux. It was a bitter disappointment for the ambitious, self-confident Dane, who says of himself: "If I play well, then I'm better than everyone else."

Rune has a reputation for being uncontrolled on and off the court

After his victory at the Master 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy in October 2022, Rune made it into the top ten for the first time. By late summer 2023, he had improved in the ranking to 4th place. Rune's talent is undisputed. At the same time, however, he is haunted by the reputation of being uncontrolled on and off the court. In an interview before the Swiss Indoors in Basel, he told the NZZ last November : “I need someone to steer me in the right direction.”

The experience of Becker and Lüthi should help him. Boris personally campaigned to bring Lüthi and his experience into the team. During the Australian Open, the 56-year-old said on Eurosport : “If you can have Lüthi, then you have to grab it. He’s probably at least as good as a coach, if not better, than me.”

It wasn't competence problems between Becker and Lüthi that led to the quick end of the collaboration. Apparently Rune's mother Aneke found it difficult to keep away. In the tennis scene she has a reputation for being overprotective and shielding her son. On the ATP website, Rune himself describes her, together with his youth coach Lars Christensen, as the “biggest inspiration” in his career.

It is not unnatural on the tennis tour to have a parent as a close reference person in your environment. The fact that it is difficult for parents to let go of their children is not a tennis-specific phenomenon.

Rune is known for his frequent changes of coaches

Aneke Rune is considered extremely dominant in the tennis scene. It is attributed to her that coaching drama often occurs in her son's environment. Last year, Rune worked twice with Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou. After the second separation, Aneke Rune told the Danish “Ekstra Bladet”: “It just didn’t work out. Now it is important that Holger finds the right team that he will have for a long time. He decided that it wasn't with Patrick." There were “ego conflicts” between Mouratoglou and Holger Rune’s long-term coach Lars Christensen.

Christensen is still in the Dane's team, as is Becker until further notice. For Severin Lüthi, his time with the Dane is up after just a few weeks. "I'm not leaving Holger with a grudge. He undoubtedly has great potential. But the timing wasn't ideal and it just didn't work out."

For Rune to fire Patrick Mouratoglou and then rehire him when he faced pressure this guy has no discipline and very hot headed.

Someone will always work for him as he will pay big bucks. But never for long term.

He never fired him and still trains occasionally at the Mouratoglou Academy in Nice. He just stopped using him as his main coach for awhile, then resumed working with him on grass.
