Nice that your parents would offer to buy you another racket.....

....are they paying for your stringing too? or is that up to you? do you have a job?

I'd say get the racket. Preferably the same model, gripsize, etc. as the one you have now. With two frames strung, you'll go longer between stringjobs.

If you want, you can save up to get yourself a stringer. Or perhaps your parents will see how much stringing costs and if you're serious about the game, they'll help you out with a stringer later on.....

Here's a thought, granted you make the team:

When I was playing HS tennis, I learned how to string racquets and I offered my services to the other team members. My usual fee was $15 which included Prince Syn Gut Duraflex. You have four years of potential business ahead of you! I would invest in a stringer (if you make the team). The stringer will pay for itself within the first year or two and after that, you will be making pure profit.

You can use this money to buy a new racquet or whatever. At the very least, all the strings you break yourself will be free. Write up a business proposal and show it to your parents. Find out how much reels of string cost and how many racquets you can get out of that. I think your parents will be impressed and jump at this learning opportunity.

I know I bought I machine to string for me and then I soon met friends that begged me to string for them for cheap. Chances are if you are asking yourself this question it would be best to get one. I wouldn't go all out and get 5000$ stringer though. Go with Klippermate or gamma x2. Good luck!:)

Your parents are probably afraid this is just another brief passing interest. When you become serious about tennis, you will quickly improve - you will start breaking strings often, and have a need for multiple rackets. When that happens bring up the cost of the stringer and cost of strings. Good Luck

If it matters - you could easily sell the x-2 on this board for close to the price of purchase.

Reasons to buy:
1) You are a string breaker.
2) Learning to string will save you tons of $$$ if you do it for life.
3) It will allow you to try various strings without worrying about $$$.
4) You can make extra $$$ stringing for friends.
5) It is not that much $$$ to buy the X-2.
6) You can resell your machine if you decide stringing is not for you.
7) You enjoy stringing rackets.

Reasons not to buy:
1) You rarely break strings.
2) Time - You either don't have enough or don't want to waste it on stringing.
3) You do not enjoy stringing rackets.

That's only if you yourself can produce quality stringing.....

...not everyone is handy.

Very true, and it also seems that those individules,(the non handy ones as you call), that fall into this category that still try to string, work at the big box stores.Another reason to string your own.

If you plan on playing tennis even somewhat seriously throughout your life, then a stringer will definitely save you money as well as allow you to openly try various strings to suit your game. Start with something around $300. If you calculate that you will save $10 in stringing fees per string job, then the machine will have completely paid for itself in just over 30 string jobs. And those 30 string jobs will include some that you will do for tennis friends.

My shop charges me $18 labor for stringing, so you could break even much earlier, depending on your local costs.
