So why isn't Llodra playing the singles tomorrow?

So this guy has the week of his career in Paris, thrashing Djokovic on his way to being one forehand away from the finals. And now Simon is playing singles instead, even though his form has been terrible as of late?

What gives?

The Tie is in Serbia. They choose the court surface. Rest Assure it will be nothing like the surface that Llodra beat Djokovic and had his run.

Not to say he cant duplicate the same result on a much slower court, its just going to be a bit tougher.

I was going to ask the same question. I'm disappointed that Llodra is not playing singles. I suppose the hardcourt they will play in Belgrade is not as fast as the one in Paris Master.

But, Llodra is ranked 23 and Simon is ranked 42. I think Guy Forget will regret it. I hope not.

Still, it's good Llodra playing doubles.. he's specialist at that.

Plus Llodra is playing the doubles, and they need to have him fresh so they take that point. They can always put him in on the last day if he's playing fantastic and Simon is not

I was surprised as well. I really wanted to see Llodra play singles. I love the way he plays. And we all know Djokovic is vulnerable to serve and volleyers as we've seen at the Paris Masters against Llodra and against Haas at Wimbledon last year. He got creamed both times. And Simon's play lately has been less than stellar.

it's a bit suprising... i would have prefered to see llodra too.

they probably want to have a fresh llodra for the double, and maybe they think that, as djokovic is probably going to win his first single match whoever his opponent is, maybe simon has more chances to make him a bit tired for sunday despite losing, due to the nature of his game ?

Guy Forget, the French captain, says he wants Llodra (and Clement) fresh for the doubles, so that's why Llodra isn't playing the singles. Monfils and Simon will have a day off after the first day's play, so will be fresh for Sunday, which could be a crucial day, although if I'm not mistaken, Forget could nominate another player in the place of either Monfils or Simon on Sunday depending on how things have been going.

France has a better chance with Llodra playing 2 singles matches since IMO they are underdogs in every singles match and Llodra has greater upset potential. Anyway, I remember Forget from his playing days and he wasnt exactly a tactical genius out there.

Monfils is not an under dog vs tipsarevic in anyway (as score indicated) and neither is Simon.
Gilles won a title recently, made semis in Valencia and had good wins in Paris (though a terrible loss to Sod). he's better on the surface and the Gilles/Monfils double is so physically draining for any opponent.

My guess is that they wanted Llodra fresh. On this slow surface, there's no way they want Llodra to play first Djokovic, then doubles, then Monfils. All in best-of-five, and Llodra doesn't have all THAT much experience playing consecutive five-set matches.

Llodra is a must-have for the doubles, and if they had to pick ONE singles match to put him in, it would be the second day when he's playing the serbian #2, Tipsarevic or Troicki.

So I can see the reasoning for having that tip the scales in favor of Simon for the first match, at least.

I'm conflicted: I really want Llodra to win but in the same time if Forget is considered like a genius after that, i'm going to cry.

Smart move by Guy. Llodra and Clement should win the doubles tomorrow and put them in the strong position going into Sunday. Monfils vs. Djok will be a classic which you have to think Djok will win. So then it's Troikci or Tips vs. LLodra, Clement or Simon - Whoo boy that has epic drama rollercoaster ride written all over it!

I'm still disappointed that Llodra is not playing singles.

France should go all out, all attack. All or nothing. It's the big final, for God's sake. Llodra should've played Djokovic. He wouldn't be tired for the double. He should go all out and then play the double. More matches will really pump him up. He'll be more nervous playing double without playing single first.

I don't think Simon wore Djokovic down. It's the final, Guy! Don't be scared of being tired! It's the real thing!
