Stringing in mains vs. crosses

What are the differences you get by stringing in either the mains or the crosses? In a hybrid, do you put the string you mainly want to use in the mains or is it the opposite? Also, what benefits do you get from stringing the crosses higher or lower (or the same) when compared with the mains?

All of the answers to your questions have to do with what you want, and how they feel to you. But, generally speaking. You use durability in the mains and playability in the crosses. But, even that can change. There are to many different variations, I'm not sure there is one way you can summarize them.

The variations affect people in different ways.

String the mains (Mostly Poly) looser to get the power and the crosses (Syth gut for playability) tighter to get the most control out of the string

I think you have a misconception there. Mains and crosses are not what affects how you tight you string. Rather it is the string that dictates. Polys should always be strung looser by about 2-3lbs irregardless of whether you put them in the mains or crosses. This is because polys are less elastic than multifilaments or gut or syn gut hence if you string them tighter you will restrict the stretch of the syn gut/multi/gut on ball contact and end up with a dead feeling string bed with very little pocketing.

Agreed........

There are so many variations on hybrids that it's tough to say one way is better than another. It really comes down to what you are looking for in your racquet performance. String and tension are a big factor but so is the racquet itself as some manufacturers have strict rules when stringing racquets (Yonex, Prince, Head to name a few), that can impact the racquets performance (racquet power, vibration, sweetspot, ball compression, etc.) and warrantee.

I personally prefer Gut in the mains and Poly in the cross in my Yonex racquets. The gut in the main gives me the old feel when I used to use all gut, but the poly adds a level of control that all gut did not (unless stung really tight, but then you lose feel) and it also lasts a little longer than all gut.

If durability is your concern, then a full poly might be the way unless you have arm problems or don't like the stiff feel. This is why hybrids are so popular now, as it allows you to customize racquet performance and feel.

Basically in general terms, put the poly in the mains if you want better durability, but put the multi/gut in the mains if you want more feel and comfort. Good luck in your search.
