Strings that lost their “snap back”. What does it mean?

Scoop

My setup is ALU mains @ 45 with OGSM crosses @ 43. I typically restring after 6-10 hours of play as the ALU goes dead quickly. That said, I’ve started to notice that after 2-3 hours the strings are out of place and lose their snap back.

Does that impact playability and is it simply a function of stringing with a low tension? Or, is there something else at play here?

friction will cause the string bed to lock.

It's the loss of tension in mains and increase in friction from crosses.

You can try to prestretch the Alu and string slightly higher and string the OGSM slightly lower.

Even better would be to use the Isospeed Baseline as the cross. It's almost as soft as syn, but way more slippery. Still prestretch both mains and crosses.

Waxing will generally wake up a string bed again and get everything moving.
You can do that routinely and get a lot more life from a string job.

If they’re out of place randomly in short lengths, probably still playable. If multiple strings are deflected over long lengths then they’re not doing their job.

i always thought the eleastocross thingies lock the strings in more... so i stopped using them.
haven't tried the waxing thing.
It depends. If you put them on new strings with high snapback like poly or gut/poly sure it will lock them more. But if you put them on notched strings like the op is talking about or strings with high friction like kev/kev or full syngut or multi, then you actually get more snapback, so it depends on the situation.
