Synthetic/Multi Hybrid Setup

Anyone tried Synthetic/Multi Hybrid Setup? I have been using that setup for my MGPP and had pretty good result.

I use Gosen Micro 17g as Main 55 lbs. And either NRG2 or Xcel Cross at 55 lbs.
The reason that I prefer Gosen Micro 17g is that it's relatively durable and more respnsible than Poly as main in Poly/Multi setup.

Also Gosen Micro doesn't move or lose tension much. If i use Multi as main, it will surely move crazily.

I don't like poly/multi setup. Poly usually goes dead too quickly and it seems to waste my half set premium multi.

For Gosen Micro/Multi setup, I can usually play until Cross(multi) breaks with almost the same feel.

I know this is an old thread but I am about to try this Hybrid setup and was trying to decide Multi or Syn Gut for the mains. After reading this I will try Syn Gut in the mains. I have been moving away from all Poly setup. I have been trying Poly (mains) and Syn Gut. I like it but play with a stiff frame so trying to soften it up more at higher tensions. My frame at lower tension is too powerful so l am liking the control at higher tension but want to keep a soft combination.
I am thinking this combo may give up spin and/or power compared to Poly/Syn gut?

Racket: Head Speed 360+ Pwr - Being an bigger oversize frame make is too powerful at lower tensions.
Poly (main) with Syn Gut Crosses - 57/60lbs (currently) Good control and feel but still firmer than I would like.

Any suggestions I will welcome!

I think that there's a world of difference between heavier vs. lighter gauges of poly. I bring this up since you didn't mention the gauges of strings you've been recently using or sampling. If you want that hybrid you noted above to play less harsh, I'd say drop at least 4 lbs. tension in the poly mains and probably at least 2 or 3 lbs. in the crosses.

If you want some degree of "poly performance" in your racquet without having it play too harsh, I definitely recommend some experiments with hybrids including poly mains that are 1.20mm or thinner. Among the locals who use me for stringing, I've seen great success with a hybrid of Isospeed Baseline 1.20mm mains paired with a 16 ga. syn. gut cross. Sorting out tensions is about finding what feels right for you.

Thanks Fuzz Nation. That is a good idea. I am currently using 16g(1.30) and 17g (1.25) for durability with 16g (1.30) synthetic gut. I will definitely try 1.20mm (17L).
Been looking at trying Isospeed Baseline so this would be a good time.

I've had very good success with my setup after fiddling with various strings. I use Prince Lightning XX 17g main and then Gosen G-Tour 3 17L for crosses. Much prefer thin strings when using poly

Thanks Hadoken - So you are using a synthetic gut main with thin poly crosses? Both strings sound really interesting. What tension and what racket do you play with this configuration?

I've played poly main and syn gut crosses which is firm and durable but nothing special. Softer than full bed poly.

Also played syn gut main and poly crosses. Much more comfortable and more powerful. A lot less durable. Prefer this setup and its cost effective. Syn gut breaks before poly goes dead.

And used multi main syngut crosses. Again nothing too special. Locks up quick and strings get stuck all over the place. More comfort and power but less spin. Not particularly durable either.

Depends on what you want. Experiment and try

I used multi mains with syngut crosses for a short period a few years ago, when I was a bit lost strings-wise. I liked it more than fb multi mainly because it lasted more and played less powerful with an extra touch of crispiness but less than fb syngut. Looking back it was a bit silly, I don’t think this setup has any advantages over a multi/soft poly hybrid.

I now play with either poly mains / multi or syngut crosses or soft poly fb. And every year I string 1-2 racquets with fb syngut for the memories.

I use yonex DR98s strung at 42lbs. I was a longtime synthetic only user and was a little leary going to poly due to the stiffness. So I figured the easiest transition was a super thin poly as the crosses. There isn't a ton of 17L polys out there so I kinda just stumbled on GTour3 which was also in my budget.

Lightning xx is much better than generic synthetic, very lively and powerful. So the combo is a pretty good compromise for me who grew up on synthetics. I also tried multis as the mains and really don't like it...too mushy since I string on the lower end.

I just sold used Vcore 98s on auction and had this same setup...buyer reached out to me and raved about the combo so give it a shot...its cheap enough to try out

Hi,

I would like to use the GT3 1.23 as cross in a hybrid with Head Velocity 1.25 mains. I would like a slick smooth, soft poly for the crosses, with good tension maintenance, that does not (or at least reduces) notches the Velocity. Do you think it would work?

I can't find anything about this string, except for the producer info. Can you tell me, please, how does it play, and maybe estimate the following based on your experience with the GT3 and other polys:

Stiffness:
Tension loss %:
Spin potential:

Racket: Head 360+ Speed MP
