talk about classlessness--journalists

I'd like to staunch the flow of hate lingering around here to point out some really nice words by venus and serena. i already pasted the relevant section from venus, and will do so again at the bottom of the post, but check out what happened in serenas interview:

Q. Can you comment just two things: A woman who served 20 aces in a match like this, and the No. 1 of the world who loses 6‑1, 6‑Love. What you can say about that?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I served 20 aces today?

Q. 20.

SERENA WILLIAMS: Awesome. That's way cool. I guess it was three long sets, though.

Uhm, well, I think that Dinara was playing a player as tough as Venus. You know, it's not the easiest opponent on grass. Venus was playing really well.

Q. She's the No. 1 of the world.

SERENA WILLIAMS: She's ranked No. 1 in the world. She's worked really hard to get there. She's been really consistent. I don't think anyone should take that away from her.

perhaps i should put this in an existing thread, but with all the hate, especially with williams, wta, etc, wanted to bring attention to this, if you catch the rest of the interview, she said tons of good things about dementieva, the only 'not on my best game' type things were that her forehand was off.

i don't watch much wta but was really, really impressed by serena when she beat azarenka, awesome shotmaking. (as soon as azarenka hit a passive ball, serena put a winner in a corner.)

here's a repost of what i took from venus's:

Q. You beat the computer today, the computer system, beat the No. 1 in the world 6‑1, 6‑Love.

VENUS WILLIAMS: You know what, I did. I guess that's a good way of putting it. I mean, I'm not the No. 1 seed. I shouldn't be expected, I guess, to win this match.

But obviously my record on grass, I think, and my experience, helped me a lot today.

Q. Do you think the system must be changed for the qualifications?

VENUS WILLIAMS: For the rankings? You know what, it's too early to say. We have to go on and see how that works this whole year, because the ranking system is new. It's too early to say right now.

Q. It should be based on the big four or...

VENUS WILLIAMS: I haven't given it a ton of thought, how it should be based. So for me to comment on it now would be too soon.

Q. This isn't your fault obviously because you played really well, but it's embarrassing for women's tennis to see the No. 1 destroyed in that way, isn't it?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Why do you put it like that?

Q. You played very well.

VENUS WILLIAMS: Are you trying to be down on women's tennis?

Q. I'm trying to be down on the way that Safina is the world No. 1 representing women's tennis.

VENUS WILLIAMS: So you're trying to be down basically.

Q. Not on women's tennis, no.

VENUS WILLIAMS: Okay, because I don't deal with down at all.

Q. It's not down.

VENUS WILLIAMS: I'm just making sure you're not trying to be down, because I respect Dinara Safina immensely, and I think you should, too.

Q. I do.

VENUS WILLIAMS: Thanks.

Q. When you see the No. 1 losing 1 and O, it doesn't look great for women's tennis, does it?

VENUS WILLIAMS: I think women's tennis is fantastic.

no surprise though, thats what journalists do - try and bring gossip out. look at him/her trying to force venus into saying dinara is a bad player

Agreed; she exposed the questions as the pointless flamebait they were designed to be.

That journalist is a total jerk. Interestingly enough, he/she was following the line seen here on TW more than once.

Agreed. The journalist are just trying to start something between players. Venus handled it very well.

Don't kill the messenger, for journalists make a living out of selling papers. Ask yourselves, who is buying them? Who are in the end the real classless ones?
