Tennis scoring system is favorable for older more experienced players

What do you guys think about this? The current scoring system allows players to take it easy on some points and put all their effort into big points. It’s very brutal mentally as well, since a player who is playing better, winning easy service games, can end up on the losing end.

Perhaps an accumulative scoring system similar to volley ball or table tennis would favor young guys more?

Btw, this is just for fun, don’t get too worked out about it.

If it was the scoring system would Becker, Sampras and others have won slams as teenagers?
I think yes, but not the current instagram generation imho.

NB. I’m not advocating changing the scoring system. I’m just interested in discussing if the scoring system is allowing the older clutch generation to play longer.

I don't think there is much wrong with the standard scoring system at the Elite Level. (I think it should be reduced at lower levels. eg. Best of 2 with 3rd Set Match TB)

One thing I don't like is games having lots of Deuce Points. I think a Sudden Death Point should be played after the 5th Deuce Point. (But it should be Servers Choice NOT Receivers Choice)

It certainly works wonders for Federer. The last few years his gameplan has just been to cruise on serve, pounce on an early break opportunity and then kinda stop trying on return after that.
That’s exactly my point. I think Djokovic and Nadal were following a somewhat similar game plan in the most recent matches.

Cue in Mac talking about "IS HE GONNA PLAY EVERY POINT LIKE THAT???!!!"

No, he clearly isn't going forward and he shouldn't lol play smarter not harder.

In my tennis group, due to court time restrictions, we started implementing tie-break sets of 25 points each. We play BO3 and the whole match lasts between 40 minutes to one hour. The nice thing about this system is that there is no deuce until the end of the set, and every point counts. I find that I win much more often now. I don’t know why exactly but probably the traditional scoring system doesn’t suit my game because I go after every point and get too nervous on big points.

I like the tennis scoring system where some points are more important than others. Life is like that too and big opportunities and big crisis happen once in a while and in order to lead a happy, successful life, you have to figure out how to deal well with those turning points. Tennis is good training for dealing with life’s big moments.

I have found that many of the toughest competitors I face in singles at the adult rec level are usually pretty successful in their work profession also as they have the ability to play fearlessly on big points and keep their intensity steady throughout a long match. These are good skills to have in life also.

Very good points. As it happens, the big3 are all shrewd businessmen who are very successful on the business side too.

Agree with everything you say here. Tennis certainly teaches people a lot of useful Life skills.

One thing about the game too ... one player can win the most points, or the most games in the match, but can still lose the match. It's a funny old sport when the player who wins the most points can still lose the match.
