Tension suggestions? PSGD to PHT+VS

I'm a hard-hitting heavy top-spin baseliner, strong 4.5 to weak 5.0 range. I don't have a ton of "power" - I just seem to swing hard to generate depth with a lot of spin (extreme western grip). I've been playing with PSG and PSGD for probably ten years. All in Head Prestige frames - currently Flexpoint Prestige MP's.

I typically play with either 18 gauge with stringsavers or 17 gauge with or without stringsavers. Typical tension is 58 on a constant pull machine. Stringsavers are kinda stupid for me - they cost more than the strings themselves, and I do string for myself. But I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I plan to switch strings - partly because I just got a bunch of PHT17g+VS hybrid packs. Partly because I'm looking for a bit more feel and power. I should probably change frames and not strings at this point, but that's a question for another day.

I expect this will be dramatic change in strings (feel, power, pain, etc.) and am looking for suggestions for tensions, and if anyone thinks I should put the gut in the mains instead of crosses.

My experience with the PSGD is that it is good for about 4 hours. After that it fades fairly quickly, and is junk after 5 or 6 hours. Dead dead dead. If I don't use stringsavers the 18 gauge lasts about 1-2 hours, and the 17 gauge lasts 2-3 hours. I don't like the 16 gauge - I think the dense string bed makes top spin too difficult and feel is really compromised.

I tried a Kirschbaum poly 2 or 3 years ago (Touch Turbo if I recall). I really liked that string, but a) it was kinda expensive for me at the time, 2) it was a little hard on the elbow (though I don't typically have TE problems), and 3) after a few hours its performance fell off a cliff - like from one shot to the next, whereas PSGD tends to fade over 15-30 minutes of hard hitting.

Suggestions for tensions I should try? Mains? Crosses? What can I expect for durability given my experience with PSGD? My primary goal is to pick up a bit of power (depth) without sacrificing any control or hurting myself (I'm almost 45 years old and should probably stop swinging like I'm 25!).

If anyone wants the nitty gritty details - DT (measured with an ERT 300) is typically 44 right off the stringer, 41 or 42 a few hours later (before hitting) and after 4 hours of hard play it's in the 33-35 range and headed downhill fast.

Thanks!

Try stringing it with 56lbs, I find it very balanced in terms of power, control and spin, but for me, the string breaks too fast.

Good luck =]
