Has anyone else seen this fly on the wall documentary by William Klein filmed at the 1981 French Open?
If you haven't I advise you do, it has all the 'Golden Era' protagonists in it.
Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Vilas, Nastase, Clerc, Noah, Pecci, Evert, Navaratilova etc etc....
It really is Golden Era heaven!

(How do I highlight the link above by the way?)

Here is the link to all the 17 parts that make up the whole film.

Orantes must hold the comeback records of modern tennis

He learnt a lot of the comeback he suffered from Borg, when the 18 yrs swede defeated him at the RG final in 74, after being two sets down.BTW, Borg had just made a great comeback against Vilas, a few weeks earlier at Rome.

Tony Roche a month later at Wimbledon in 5

Roger Taylor at the 75 crutial DC tie

Guillermo Vilas at the famous USO semi in 75

Eddie Dibbs at Barcelona 76

..and the faous Masters final that he won vs Fibak at Houston 76 ( after the famous incdent with Kirk Douglas wife)

Hard to find a guy that has done so many comebacks in so many important matches

Maybe cause he had to comeback to play after spending half of the year at th Surgeon desk?

other great comebackers:

Of course Borg, who won the 74 FO against Orantes and against Kriek at the 1980 USO

Lendl is another great comebacker: agaisnt Gerulaitis in that memorable Masters final in 1982, and, of course, against Mac at the 84 FO, and Agassi against Medvedev 15 yrs later at the same championship

Panatta was another inspired player, just like Orantes, and he had those famous back to back comebacka at both, the 76 Italian Open ( saved like 10 mp agaisnt Hutka in the first match) and against Warwick at the 76 FO ( saved like 7 or 8 mp also first round)...and, as history goes, he ended up winning BOTH tournaments

Borg,Lendl, Panatta and Orantes. two machine like players and two artist united by their love for big stage comebacks...
What happened with Kirk Douglas wife?

What happened with Kirk Douglas wife?

Sorry jay, I reopened my post as a new thread.

Anyway, that was funny.

The 76 Masters Tournament was hosted at the Houston Astrodome, which was the biggest indoor venue in tennis history.

Fibak was leading two sets to one and, in that time, players got a 15 minute break at the end of the third set.Kirk Douglas and wife were among the public watching the final.

A TV camera, during the halt, interviewed Kirk and asked him who would be the winner of the final. As expected, Douglas said " Fibak".

It looked like the actor´s wife ( can´t remember her name) knew more tennis than her husband because, probbaly knowing what Orantes had done months ago at Forest Hills, she cut her husband and dressing to the camera she said something like " Orantes will trail it".

That interview was forecasted through the huge screens in the arena. Both players listened to the conversation.

When play resumed, Fibak was highly under pressure, and that had direct link to that recent interview.Orantes played very relaxed and took the final two sets to win the Masters.

When he was picking his trophy, in the middle of the court, he took the micro and thanked Kirk Douglas wife.of all the nearly 20.000 people in the arena, he said, only Kirk´s wife and himself thought that they could win the match, being down two sets to one.
