Vitas in Brooklyn ( and later in Long Island) and Mac in Queens. Both flashy style players, but Broadway Vitas was the empathic newyorker liked by everybody while Mac was, well, the brash and egocentric hated newyorker.

The great thing of this Big Apple rivalry is that IT TOOK PLACE in the 5 district city.Remember this: Mac beat Vitas twice at Flusihing ( one easy final and one hard fought semi , in 79 and 81) and Vitas equalled the Big Apple derby with two more New York wins ( a hard fought Masters semi at MSG in 79 and an easy WCT Forest Hills final in 80)

Mac won at the brash venues and Vitas at the classy ones.It couldn´t be otherwise.

Well, they met some other times in official matches ( and many in exos).Mac beat Vitas at the Canadian Open in 1979 and he also beat him at the Milan Open that year.

But , no better place than their home city for this torrid rivalry...between two prototypichal newyrokers who happened to be very good mates. Both joined forces to win the 79 DC for the USA¡¡

Which kind of new Yorkers supported Mac? and which supported Gerulaitis? was it a Geographic preference? or a social?

Vitas was not a Brooklyn kid.......yes he was born in Brooklyn but he was like JMac a Queens kid thru and thru. He grew up in Howard Beach (which does border Brooklyn) but he played tennis at Port Washington Academy just like JMac and his high school is smack in the middle of the Forest hills /Kew Gardens area. Douglaston where JMac grew up is/was a super nice area but Howard Beach just about a nice just on the other end of Queens.
Everybody loved Vitas he was a super well known son of a local teaching pro and from a big tennis family.
